Third grade teacher Shari Gardner was named Teacher of the Year last night at the Summit County Education Celebration. The Summit County Educational Service Center holds the annual event to honor area teachers and contributors to education.

Gardner has taught at Manchester's Nolley Elementary School all 23 years of her career. She is the second Teacher of the Year winner from the Manchester district in as many years.

    Other 2011 winners include:

Rookie of the year: Ally Wehmann, a first grade teacher at Fort Island Primary in the Copley-Fairlawn District.

Individual Lifetime Educator:  Dr. R. Louis Daugherty, fifth superintendent of the County Office of Education who helped transform county boards of education in Ohio into educational service centers.

Business Lifetime Educator: The Akron Beacon Journal, for programs such as the Newspaper in Education program and participation in Akron Reads and the Millenium Fund for Children among other civic engagements.
