COLUMBUS: Ohio's leading higher education official has announced he plans to resign ahead of schedule.

Chancellor Eric Fingerhut said in a statement Tuesday that he will leave his post on March 13, after serving four years of his five-year term. Republican Gov. John Kasich will pick his successor.

Then-Gov. Ted Strickland, a Democrat, appointed Fingerhut as chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents in March 2007 and put him in charge of laying out a 10-year plan for using higher education to help the state's ailing economy. Fingerhut was the first to serve under a law that makes the chancellor a member of the governor's Cabinet.
