Ohio teachers asked for pay cut to help levy

TOLEDO, OHIO: School administrators in one of Ohio's largest cities are asking teachers to accept a pay cut to help the district at the ballot box.

Facing a projected $44 million deficit in the next school year, the Toledo public schools want voters to approve a school levy on Nov. 2 to provide the district with about $22 million annually.

The Blade newspaper reports Thursday that school officials have asked teachers to agree to a 3 percent reduction in pay before Election Day to help the levy's chances.

Teachers union president Fran Lawrence doesn't want to go to the bargaining table now, months ahead of the usual schedule. She's polling her members to see what they think.
