Stow-Munroe Falls and Hoban HS students win essay contest

An Archbishop Hoban High School and a Stow-Munroe Falls High School student beat out more than 50,000 other participants for top spots in America's largest high school essay contest, the Bill of Rights Institute announced today.

Representing the Great Lakes Region, David Sutter, a senior at Archbishop Hoban High School, earned Third Place and $1,250 in the fourth annual Being An American Essay Contest. Karen Angiulo, a senior at Stow-Munroe Falls High School, earned an Honorable Mention prize and $250. The national competition is sponsored by the Bill of Rights Institute, an educational nonprofit based near Washington, D.C.

Sutter and Angiulo's sponsoring teachers, Jason Anderson and Laura Payne respectively, received matching cash prizes.

In addition to the cash prizes, Sutter and Anderson also won paid trips to the nation's capital, where they were honored on March 23 at an awards gala. The Washington, D.C. trip also included a Capitol Hill luncheon with federal lawmakers, a meeting with Congresswoman Betty Sutton in her office, and tours of the U.S. Capitol, Supreme Court and National Archives.
