WEWS Adds "Lost" Replay

By admin Published: May 25, 2010

In addition to Saturday's national rerun of the series finale, WEWS (Channel 5) will show it at 1:06 a.m. Thursday -- or, if you prefer, really late Wednesday night. The broadcast will run about 2 1/2 hours. As you probably know, Sunday's telecast was disrupted by technical problems for many viewers.

Channel 5 Statement on "Lost" Snafu

This comes from Sam Rosenwasser, Vice President/General Manager, WEWS. And I have been told that the problem will not occur during tonight's "Dancing With the Stars":

One of the most-anticipated nights of ABC entertainment programming this year was scheduled for Sunday night, which means last night was the worst possible time for a technical problem … but that’s exactly what we experienced.

Goodbye, "Lost" (Updated)

By admin Published: May 23, 2010

After the jump, notes on tonight's disappointing series finale -- at least as well I could watch it around Channel 5's technical difficulties, which were continuing well after midnight.

My scheduled appearance on Channel 5 tomorrow has been dropped. A station rep tells me: "Because of major technical problems on WEWS during 'Lost," we are scaling back our coverage Monday morning."

Sunday Notebook

By admin Published: May 23, 2010

Well, it's goodbye "Lost" day, as was obvious moments after I woke up; "SportsCenter" was drawing a smoke monster into the middle of a baseball highlight. In any case, my look back at the show is here (and the finale is 2 1/2 hours, as the story says). My plan is to post a "Lost" write-up late tonight, after watching the finale.

Some items about the Fall 2010 TV lineups on the broadcast networks: an overview is here, capsules of new shows are here and a list of returning shows is here. You can find more detailed descriptions and information in my posts over the past week, which include the individual networks' entire announcements.

Instead, in addition to the complete-first-season set, is releasing a "Road to Regionals" set consisting of the nine episodes not included in "Road to Sectionals." That way, you can either buy the whole thing or just the episodes you don't already have -- so no rebate.

MTV Sets New "Teen Wolf," Gives "Skins" Green Light

By admin Published: May 20, 2010

From MTV: Filled with suspense, horror and the struggle to discover one’s true identity, MTV puts a modern spin on one of the most popular classic films of the eighties, MGM’s “Teen Wolf”. The reinvention comes alive as a sexy thriller set against the drama of high school life with a forbidden, romantic love story at its core. Additionally, MTV steers a fearless path with the greenlight of the North American adaptation of the U.K. drama series “Skins”. Both series greenlights were announced today by MTV President of Programming, Tony DiSanto. From the creator of “Criminal Minds,” Jeff Davis, and the executive producers of “The 4400,” René Echevarria and “Prison Break,” Marty Adelstein, “Teen Wolf” will commence production this summer with 12 one-hour episodes. “Skins” will also begin production this summer with 10 one-hour episodes.

"Eureka"/"Warehouse 13" Crossover Set

By admin Published: May 19, 2010

The crossover airs in August. "Warehouse 13" starts its second season on July 6; "Eureka" starts its fourt season on July 9.

From Syfy: In the episodes, which are currently filming, Douglas Fargo (Neil Grayston) of Eureka's Global Dynamics is sent to Warehouse 13 to help update its aging computer system. This triggers a seemingly sentient computer virus that sends the Warehouse into lockdown and traps the team inside. The Warehouse 13 episode is entitled “13.1” and will air on Tuesday, August 3, at 9PM (ET/PT). The Eureka episode entitled “Crossing Over,” will air on Friday, August 6, at 9PM (ET/PT). Warehouse 13's Claudia Donovan (Allison Scagliotti) pays a visit to Eureka, hoping to see some amazing technological wonders. She gets more than she bargained for when seemingly random objects begin appearing around town. Working with Sheriff Carter (Colin Ferguson) and Fargo, Claudia has to help solve the mystery before the strange anomalies have deadly consequences...particularly for newcomer Dr. Grant (James Callis). Rene Auberjonois (Boston Legal and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) will guest star in the Warehouse 13 episode as former Warehouse agent Hugo Miller.

GLAAD Joins Newsweek Debate

By admin Published: May 12, 2010

You may have been following the argument over Newsweek's essay "Straight Jacket," which you can find here. People including "Glee" guest star Kristin Chenoweth and "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy have responded negatively, with Murphy calling the essay "homophobic."

I think the piece, by Ramin Setoodeh, was wrongheaded in arguing that audiences will not accept openly gay men in straight roles, that ''an actor's background does affect how we see his or her performance.'' Neil Patrick Harris has been cited as an example working against Setoodeh's thesis, and I think it's a valid one regardless of the writer's argument cited below.

Lena Horne, R.I.P.

By admin Published: May 10, 2010

The splendid singer and great beauty has died. I had the good fortune to interview her many years ago, and she was delightful and direct. But you should make note of her as a singer, and especially the way she could phrase a lyric -- a skill that far too many young singers lack. Look for her "Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music," the album version of her Broadway show (where, by the way, "Dancing With the Stars'" Harold Wheeler was musical director). Listen to the way she coolly controls a song but with a current of sexiness and humor -- in "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered," for example, what she does with the line about "worship the trousers that cling to him." What a great dame.

These ideas and many, many more make up COMEDY CENTRAL's 2010-2011 development slate announced today by Kent Alterman, head of original programming and production, COMEDY CENTRAL.

The network has also set summer and fall premiere dates for previously announced new series including "Futurama," "Big Lake," "Nick Swardson's Pretend Time," "The Onion Sports Network" (working title), "Workaholics" and "Russell Simmons Presents: Stand-Up at the El Rey." As I mentioned in a previous post, I wrote a column about Kent State and popular culture. One of the things I noted was that there were an estimated two dozen songs about Kent State, but only CSNY's "Ohio" had significant commercial impact. Still, I noted that an upcoming Bear Family collection of Vietnam songs includes three: the Beach Boys' "Student Demonstration Time," Barbara Dane's "The Kent State Massacre" and Third Condition's "Monday in May." After the story ran, I have heard from two members of Third Condition and so offer more of the story of how that band and song.

Former Akron resident John Lithgow will be back as host of the TCM movi9e series which presents "films that are ideal for parents to introduce to kids." Starting with "Old Yeller" on June 6. But I have a few questions. First, why start with "Old Yeller"? We all know where that one goes, right? Will young viewers embrace the several black-and-white titles? And how will the "High School Musical"/"Glee" take to "Bye Bye Birdie"? And what about adults viewing it through the "Mad Men" lens?
