A Very Jedi Friday To You

By Rich Heldenfels Published: May 24, 2013

Saturday will be the 30th anniversary of the release of "Return of the Jedi," the third "Star Wars" movie (and the sixth chapter, I know, I know). Entertainment Weekly has posted a nifty, nine-minute appreciation of the movie, which you can find here.

I was an old man of 31 when "Jedi" arrived, and married, and intermittently an adult. I still remember feeling all the excitement of a little boy when headed into a packed theater to see it.

A perfectly satisfying experience it was, too. I understand all the argument about "The Empire Strikes Back" being a better movie, but I liked "Jedi" better, perhaps because it brought the series to such a fine conclusion.

Or so we thought: George Lucas had to go and make three more, prequel movies, none of which measures up to this, and the Lucas deal with Disney has promised a seventh chapter and beyond. At least we can hope that the J.J. Abrams touch will reinvigorate things.
