I spent about half an hour this morning with Will Smith (and seven or eight other reporters) who had come to Cleveland to promote a new movie and promote some local charity. A brief online story from the press session is here. I'll be filing more tonight, after he does the red-carpet event mentioned in the story, and a longer piece when we get closer to Dec. 19, when "Seven Pounds" opens.
This is not the first time I have been in the presence of Smith. As an old TV critic, I saw him a couple of times when he was making "Fresh Prince of Bel Air," and once more recently when he was promoting a TV series he had helped produce. Throughout, he has been engaging, personable and charming; for all his millions and his international box-office stardom, he has remained pleasant, accessible and charming. And, I should add, an actor who has gotten better and better.
