Sunday Notebook

The bride and I were on the road much of yesterday, then attended a Halloween party in the evening. Recorded C-SPAN's telecast of the Stewart/Colbert rally, and what I've watched so far has looked as if it was a real case of "you had to be there." Haven't gotten to "Saturday Night Live" yet and may not until this evening, maybe after "Amazing Race." Homework awaits.

Tuesday Notebook: Radio Heat, New Kara Gig, ABC Pickups

By admin Published: October 26, 2010

Kind of up to my ears in things today but a few things worth noting:

The folks at "ESPN Cleveland," aka WKNR (850-AM), gave their own talk shows plenty of screaming fodder today by deciding not to carry tonight's ESPN Radio broadcast of the Miami-Boston NBA game -- or, apparently, any other Miami games. You can understand why. I have another view. I'd like to see -- hope to see -- the Great Miami Experiment get off to a lousy start. The game is on TNT. If you're wanting a radio version, you may get help from ESPN's station locator here. I checked with WTIG (990-AM) in Massillon and WBBW (1240-AM) in Youngstown, and both planned to carry the game.

"I'm Still Here" to DVD/BD on Nov. 23

By admin Published: October 25, 2010

Starring Joaquin Phoenix, directed by Casey Affleck, the movie was at first thought to be a documentary but proved to be something else.. Besides the material below, the DVD/BD announcement included a quote from Entertainment Weekly calling it "riveting, unflinchingly honest, scary, artful and fascinating. Grade A-" That's a cobbling together of several comments from the review, at least one of which is paraphrased (the review refers to "unflinching honesty"), which you can read in its entirety here. You can also read reviewer Owen Gleiberman's subsequent reaction to the hoax revelation here.

The official word: A raw documentary on Joaquin Phoenix's alleged career transition from the acting world to a career as an aspiring rapper is detailed in the captivating documentary. With unprecedented access, the film chronicles the lost year of Phoenix's life from his infamous appearance on the "Late Show With David Letterman" to wild artwork postings across the country by Shepard Fairey. Sometimes funny and sometimes shocking, the film is a portrait of an artist at a crossroads. Defying expectations, it deftly explores notions of courage and creative reinvention, as well as the ramifications of a life spent in the public eye.

Tom Bosley, R.I.P.

By admin Published: October 19, 2010

These are tough days for classic sitcom parents. First, Barbara Billingsley of "Leave It to Beaver" passed. Now, TMZ reports that Tom Bosley of "Happy Days" is gone.

Both had careers outside of their family shows. I just dug out the 1959 cast album of "Fiorello," where Bosley made his Broadway debut in the title role -- as New York City mayor Fiorello LaGuardia. (Take a moment to sing "Little Tin Box" or "Politics and Poker.") The liner notes observe that Bosley had by then already been in stock productions, films and off-Broadway. But much the way Billingsley was for the most part known as June Cleaver, so Bosley -- even after starring in other TV productions, like "The Father Dowling Mysteries" -- was for ever after Howard Cunningham.

A "My Name Is Earl" Reunion, Sort Of

By admin Published: October 18, 2010

As I have mentioned before, "Raising Hope" is one of those shows that people are quietly discovering -- I keep getting told by folks how much they like it -- and one of the reasons is its offbeat tone recalls the charming early seasons of "My Name Is Earl," also from producer Greg Garcia. Now it's getting more of an "Earl" flourish with Jason Lee stopping by. And I would rather see him here than on "Memphis Beat."

The couple then had two children together: Reese, 4, and Maeve, 2 ½ years old. However, their hopes of creating a harmonious new family fell short, and they are officially at their wits’ end. The oldest, Amanda, treats her mom terribly, openly defying her and bringing Jennifer to tears when she tells her she wishes her mom was dead. Reese has tremendous separation anxiety whenever John leaves the house and actually endangers herself by running pell-mell towards the street when he departs. Jo observes that the parents are coddling the children, being inconsistent about rules and parenting the children differently from each other. Can Jo get through to this family before it fractures? Lifetime Orders Heidi Klum Series

By admin Published: October 12, 2010

According to the announcement, Klum says "the kids will be the absolute stars of this show.” Which I appreciate, since I think Klum and Brooke Burke are two of the least emotive people on TV.

The official word: Lifetime Television has ordered the unscripted series Seriously Funny Kids (working title), hosted by supermodel and supermom Heidi Klum (Project Runway), for a 2011 launch, it was announced today by Lifetime Networks’ President and General Manager, Nancy Dubuc, and Executive Vice President, Entertainment, JoAnn Alfano.

Wines That Rock?

Not being an oenophile, the existence of a line of rock music-themed wines had eluded me. So don't take this as an endorsement. Just a point of interest. Official word:

Wines That Rock, innovators of rock inspired wines, announced today the launch of The Police “Synchronicity” Red Blend to join its first three Rock ‘n Roll varietals, “Rolling Stones Forty Licks Merlot,” “Woodstock Chardonnay” and “Pink Floyd The Dark Side of the Moon Cabernet Sauvignon,” released in 2009.

Goodbye, "Outlaw"

By admin Published: October 12, 2010

The news for the NBC drama starring Jimmy Smits was bad about a week ago when production was reportedly shut down after just eight episodes had been made. The latest news is even worse: NBC has canceled the show entirely and will burn off four unaired episodes on Saturdays. That makes three shows, on three different networks, wiped out by mid-October: "Lone Star," "My Generation" and "Outlaw."

I am disappointed about "Outlaw" but not overwhelmingly so. (I was more disappointed about "Lone Star.") I liked the show at first because I liked Smits and what he was doing in it. (I have posted my original review after the jump.) I kept watching, as did the bride, but it was actually getting worse as it went along. (And most viewers hadn't bothered to watch once.) It seemed as if it was setting up a lot of straw figures for Smits to knock down; two of the three episodes I watched in their entirety included cartoon-villain prosecutors.

This is good news for Hope fans, especially if the DVDs do live up to the promise of "stunning high-definition transfers." Even when these movies have been available before, there were customer complaints about the technical quality of some releases. And casual fans should note that "The Lemon Drop Kid" introduced the song "Silver Bells," which became a holiday perennial as well as part of Hope's standard repertoire.

"Raising Hope" Gets Order for More Episodes

By admin Published: October 6, 2010

More than once lately, people have said to me, "Are you watching 'Raising Hope'?" It's said with a somewhat conspiratorial tone, as if they want to know if I, too, am a true believer regarding how funny the show is. As I have said here, it is funny. The second episode as much as the first. (Haven't seen this week's telecast yet.) It has some of the same raffish tone as "My Name Is Earl," from the same creator. And the folks I am talking to are not alone in the viewing world. Enough viewers are taking to the show that Fox has ordered the back nine. The official word:

FOX has ordered an additional nine episodes of the critically acclaimed new comedy RAISING HOPE, bringing the series to a full-season order, it was announced today by Kevin Reilly, President, Entertainment for Fox Broadcasting Company.

Ghoulardifest 2010 Details

By admin Published: October 4, 2010

The official word: The legendary Ernie Anderson and Tim Conway were a popular comedy team on WJW's show Ernie's Place in the early days of Cleveland TV. Years later they joined again to record two comedy albums which have become highly sought (and very expensive) collectors items. What few knew is that the recording session for one of those LPs at Bowling Green University's WBGU-TV and was captured on film! That lost film has since resurfaced and will get its first screening at Ghoulardifest VI to be held at the UAW HALL at 5615 Chevrolet Boulevard in Parma on October 22nd, 23rd and 24th, 2010. It's just part of a jam packed weekend of entertainment at this year's event. You've heard about this legendary film and now is your chance to finally see these two comedic geniuses at work.

Man at Work

Film student Bobby Sulecki kindly passed along some photos from my interview of him and actress Ann Rutherford at the Kent State University Museum a week ago. Left to right are me, Sulecki, Rutherford. I am holding my little Olympus digital audio recorder. In a lot of situations I use it in addition to taking notes, but that's tricky because of the lack of eye contact that results; here, especially when I was talking to two people, it made more sense to trust the recorder and talk directly. And a nice talk it was. If you missed the story, it's here.
