"American Idol" Results, Final 12/36 Round, Wild Card Contenders

By admin Published: March 4, 2009

Notes after the jump.

Through to top 12: Lil Rounds, Scott MacIntyre, Jorge Nunez.
Wild card contenders: Von Smith, Jasmine Murray, Ricky Braddy, Megan Joy Corkrey, Tatiana Del Toro, Matt Giraud, Jesse Langseth and ... ANOOP DESAI!

In-progress notes below.

Paula thinks we have "an amazing start" on a top 12, which doesn't really answer Ryan's question about how this group compares to past ones. Clip reel. Group sing. Break. Recap.
Ryan chats with the contestants: Nate, Jorge, Felicia, Ju'Not.

Ryan summons Lil. Well, we know who's going ahead here. And she is. Ryan asks Kara what we can expect from Lil every week. She says, "just ridiculous vocals." Lil sings again. Dramatically.

Ryan summons Arianna, Taylor, Alex, Kendall and Scott. Ryan says one is through to the top 12 "but who is it?" Someone in the crowd yells, "Scott," which appears to be the case. We'll know for sure after the break.

Everyone has sat down again. Ryan re-summons Arianna. She says she tried to make her song contemporary and it didn't work out. Because, lest we forget, she couldn't sing. She's out.

Taylor. Out.

Alex. Says he'd rather be true to himself and lose than try to be someone else and win. He's out.

Kendall and Scott. Scott's top 12, Kendall's out. Randy says dude, Scott's go to keep it hot always and "he's going to blow up the stage every time." Then Scott sings, with way more problems than last night. Break.

Nathaniel and Kristen. "It's a no for both of you -- right now," says Ryan.

Felicia and Von. Both out "for now."

Ju'Not and Jorge. Looks as if we're being left a lot of time -- maybe for the judges to announce their wild card picks. Jorge makes top 12.

Ryan does a quick reveal of a group upstairs, along with the remains of tonight's, as wild-card contenders. More after a break.

We revisit the nine of the top 12. Not as if they're unfamiliar, since they get introduced in every show.

Simon recalls that Clay Aiken and Jennifer Hudson were wild-card contenders, and that some people this time were in a tough group or "made stupid song choices." Simon says the group even changed a decision about a contender during the break.

Contestants introduced by individual judges. First wild-card contender: Von Smith.

More: Jasmine Murray. Ricky Braddy, whom Paula thought did a "brilliant job" on his top-36 show. Megan Joy Corkrey. Tatiana Del Toro, who starts sobbing immediately and makes me want to hurl. The "last minute change" is to add Jesse Langseth. And finally, ANOOP DESAI. Who is probably going to get hosed on the wild-card since it figures they will take at least two women to balance things. And, as the last pick, he doesn't get a chat with Ryan because Jorge does the sing-off into the credits.
