Another season, another cute-white-guy win. Phil-Phil tops Jessica Sanchez, and while there will be cries to fix the show, it got the result it wanted. A week ago, Jimmy Iovine handed Phillip a Bob Seger song that proved to the audience that PP was not only able to sing a melody (however infrequently) but able to be the cute, bland, tuneful white guy that the show's voting audience so often loves. As a result, he was able to knock the far more dramatic and compelling Joshua Ledet out of the finals.
Then, last night, the show continued to confine Jessica in a straitjacket of just-sing-pretty songs (admittedly, one -- but only one -- of her own choosing) while giving Phillip a closing song that played specifically to his strengths, allowing the judges to say that he had not been kicked around the block vocally by Jessica. So he wins. It may be a win utterly lacking in musical cred, but it is one in which "Idol" gives its voting audience what it wants, however much that disenfranchises other segments of the potential voting and viewing audience.
Let me know when Jessica and Joshua have albums out, and start the clock on how long before Phillip drifts into obscurity -- becoming an "oh, that guy" in the audience when another white male wins a couple of years from now.
