Streaming site Frightpix.com has a list of its top 10 campy horror movies (as opposed, of course, to horror movies set in camp). Its recommendations, in alphabetical order: "Aaah! Zombies!", "The Attic," "The Collector," "Devil in the Flesh," "Infection: The Invasion Begins," "Mask Maker," "Psychoshark," "Seduction of Dr. Fugazzi," "They Wait" and "Toxic Avenger." I have not seen any of these (except "Toxic Avenger") so I can't judge. But neither do I feel deprived.
Hitfix, meanwhile, has a list of 10 ludicrous horror villains, among them a killer bed. Yes, you read that right. It also includes "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes," a horror-comedy, which seems not to have gotten on Ryan Murphy's radar. The list is here..To read more or comment...

Now on iTunes and On Demand, and coming to the Nightlight on Oct. 30, "Listen Up Philip" is at once a tale of bitter writers, an homage to '70s filmmaking (particularly the work of John Cassavetes) and a wonderful showcase for Elisabeth Moss. Have I convinced you to see it yet?
Let's try again. In brief: Give "Listen Up Philip" a try. Jason Schwartzman plays a writer who is also a miserable jackass, as everyone who comes in contact with him recognizes. Elisabeth Moss is excellent as Philip's girlfriend Ashley, Jonathan Pryce is Ike Zimmerman, a mentor of Philip. Alex Ross Perry wrote and directed. The ton...e is multilayered, including a mocking narration (voiced by Eric Bogosian) and a grubby style that recalls the '70s interest in documentary style and intriguing jerks. Ben Gazzara comes to mind, especially in some very Cassavetes-like scenes, as does Robert Redford in his "Little Fauss"/"Downhill Racer" period. But where those guys had charisma and occasional charm, Philip is just a creep -- as Perry admits when he shifts our interest from Philip to Ashley. And Moss is terrific, as usualTo read more or comment...

The announcement: The #1 comedy of 2014, Columbia Pictures / Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures' 22 Jump Street, will return to theaters on Friday, October 24, 2014, in advance of its release on home entertainment, it was announced today by Rory Bruer, president, Worldwide Distribution for Sony Pictures. As the film has taken in a domestic box office of over $191 million and a worldwide take over $327 million, the re-release is a chance for audiences across the country to revisit the top-grossing comedy of 2014 on the big screen.
Following the theatrical re-release, 22 Jump Street will be available early on Digital HD on October 28, and on Blu-ray and DVD on November 18.
Commenting on the announcement, Bruer said, "Clearly, audiences fell in love with these characters two years ago and this summer they showed the strong appetite for more adventures with the hilarious pairing of Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum. There's nothing like laughing out loud in a packed theater, so before the movie becomes available to own, we wanted to give moviegoers the chance to relive the experience on the big screen."
In 22 Jump Street, after making their way through high school (twice), big changes are in store for officers Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) when they go deep undercover at a local college. But when Jenko meets a kindred spirit on the football team and Schmidt infiltrates the bohemian art major scene, they begin to question their partnership. Now they don't have to just crack the case–they have to figure out if they can have a mature relationship. If these two overgrown adolescents can grow from freshmen into real men, college might be the best thing that ever happened to them. Directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller. Screenplay by Michael Bacall and Oren Uziel and Rodney Rothman, from a story by Michael Bacall & Jonah Hill, based on the television series "21 Jump Street" created by Patrick Hasburgh & Stephen J. The day after HBO made a play for cord-cutters, CBS is doing likewise. Some questions: What will this do to CBS affiliates who are not part of the new plan? Will consumers paying a bit here for HBO, and a bit there for CBS, and a bit more for other programmers, end up with a bill comparable to what they have been paying for cable? And will cable in the long run basically become a low-cost Internet provider?

The only major problem with More Than a Game is that there is not more of it.
This is a story that begs for the miniseries treatment, so that it can provide even more detail about the lives of its major characters: The Fab Five basketball players from Akron's St. Vincent-St. Mary High School and their coach, Dru Joyce II.
The film, which opens locally Friday, has long been anticipated here because one of the Fab Five is LeBron James, whose very presence invites the attention of media and audiences. At a recent University of Akron football game, eyes and binoculars strayed from the on-field action to the sideline, where James was watching.
It is James' presence that has given not only the film but a companion book a national profile, as well as putting the movie on a world tour that included a stop in Akron in August. To read more or comment...

MTV nonetheless promises it is "the wildest season yet." The official word: MTV is giving fans one final spray tan dose of everyone’s favorite BFF’s, Snooki & JWOWW. The network announced today that the final season of the hit reality series, “Snooki & JWOWW,” will premiere on Wednesday, November 5th at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.
The series returns with 12 all-new episodes chronicling the zany antics of Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, Jenni “JWOWW” Farley, their fiancés Jionni LaValle and Roger Mathews, and their new babies. In what is sure to be their wildest season yet, fans will witness the besties as they tackle life milestones including new motherhood and upcoming nuptials.
Over the past five years, viewers have fallen in love with Snooki and JWOWW, who have become a modern day Laverne and Shirley, watching them go from party girls to motherhood and roommates to wombmates, while trading in beer for baby bottles. Now it’s time to say goodbye and see how it all ends.
“I have never been more proud to be a part of a show. Since their first steps on the ‘Jersey Shore,’ I have watched these women go out, accomplish big things and find exactly what they wanted out of their lives: a ‘guido-husband/fiancé’ and to start their own families. I love these ladies and we will end this series on MTV with a bang as their lives are just getting started! Personally, I can’t wait to put Lorenzo, Meilani, and Giovanna in the ‘Jersey Shore’ house one day,” said SallyAnn Salsano, Founder & President of 495 Productions.
“It’s the last and best season yet. Two babies and a wedding! Snooki and JWOWW do it like nobody else and viewers will have one more chance to see their meaningful once-in-a-lifetime adventures,” said Susanne Daniels, President of Programming for MTV.
The final season of “Snooki & JWOWW” follows the dynamic duo as they deal with the craziest adventure of all - motherhood. Snooki and JWOWW have always joked about their desire to be pregnant together, and it's finally happened! With both girls pregnant (JWOWW’s first and Snooki’s second) and living next door to each other, the girls are growing up before our eyes. There's always time for fun, whether they're attending yoga class together, making sushi for the boys, or preparing for Snooki's upcoming wedding. The season will feature a mix of laughs and tender moments.

The official word: Prolific award-winning producer Ryan Murphy, whose American Horror Story franchise invented the anthology miniseries format, has come up with his next entry: American Crime Story, a companion anthology focused each season on a different true crime story which made headlines and captivated the imagination of the public. Interesting that Cross faces a problem for his third season akin to the one "Sledge Hammer" faced at the end of its first. ("Sledge's" solution: Make the second season a flashback to before the first.)
The official word; David Cross is bringing his scripted comedy The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret back to IFC for a third season. Based in London, the series is created, written by and stars Cross (Arrested Development) as Todd Margaret, an American lacking any sense of good judgment. After a three-year hiatus, the show will return to IFC in 2015 with six all-new, half-hour episodes picking up where the second season left off when Todd detonates a battery of nuclear bombs that incinerate the planet. Writing on the third season has begun and production will start next year.
“As thrilled as I am to not have to answer the question, ‘Hey man, will there be a third series of Todd Margaret or what?’ anymore, the true thrill comes in figuring out how to extend a serialized episodic in which the world blows up at the end of series two. How do you do that for six episodes?! Well Shaun, Mark, and I are up to the challenge,” said Cross. “I sincerely couldn't ask for a better group of folks to be doing it for than the lovely ladies (and one dude now) at IFC. It is such a pleasure to work for them. They are a rarity in this business.”

Gimple, Greg Nicotero and Conan O’Brien.
“We could not be more excited for October 12th as we share new episodes of ‘The Walking Dead’ with fans around the globe,” said AMC President Charlie Collier. “In advance of Sunday’s season five premiere, AMC proudly confirms a sixth season order of this extraordinary series. I've lately been listening to several conversations about, well, raisins. And I was quite surprised to discover how much raisin hatred (or is that rais-ism?) out there. Google "raising hating" and you'll get about 83,000 results. So where do you stand, pro- or anti-raisin? Is it a delightful fruit or sour grapes? Please respond in the comments. The official word: TV Land has ordered 10-episode first seasons of two new single-camera comedies, “Impastor” and “Teachers,” it was announced today by TV Land President Larry W. Jones. Both series will premiere on TV Land in 2015.
“’Impastor’ and ‘Teachers’ are perfect examples of the type of comedies we’re looking for as TV Land evolves its original series – innovative, unconventional, and hilariously funny for an audience that enjoys smart humor with a hint of heart,” said Jones.
“Impastor,” a single-camera comedy from Christopher Vane (“Wings”), stars Michael Rosenbaum (“Smallville”), Sara Rue (“Less Than Perfect”), Aimee Garcia (“Dexter”), Mircea Monroe (“Episodes”), Mike Kosinski (The Second City Chicago), and David Rasche (“Ugly Betty”).
The series revolves around Buddy Dobbs (Rosenbaum), a gambling, pot-smoking slacker on the run from a loan shark, who steals a man’s identity and ends up posing as the new gay pastor in a small, tight-knit town. Though he’s tempted to immediately run off with the pastor’s money, Buddy has a change of heart when he realizes that the people there, including his prim church assistant Dora (Rue), actually like this new and semi-improved alter ego…and he kind of likes them back.
Other officials at Buddy’s new church include Alexa Cummings (Monroe), the gorgeous treasurer that has Buddy rethinking his whole con; Russell Kerry (Kosinski), the young secretary who’s very excited to have a gay pastor; and Alden Schmidt (Rasche), the church president and the only person who seems to be just a little suspicious of Buddy. As Buddy deals with his new life, his bartender ex-girlfriend Leanne (Garcia), has to deal with the huge mess he left behind.
“Impastor” is executive produced by Vane and Rosenbaum, along with Eric and Kim Tannenbaum (“Two and a Half Men”). Rob Greenberg (“How I Met Your Mother”) directed the pilot.
“Teachers” revolves around six elementary school teachers who are trying to mold the minds and lives of America’s youth, even though they don’t really seem to have their own lives together at all. From refusing to read fairytales because “sometimes Prince Charming wants to date other people” to hitting on the resident “hot dad,” these teachers are certainly changing the world, one student at a time. The series stars improv group The Katydids - Caitlin Barlow, Katy Colloton, Cate Freedman, Kate Lambert, Katie O’Brien and Katie Thomas – who also wrote and starred in the web hit that the TV series is based on. In addition to writing for and starring in “Teachers,” they will also serve as executive producers alongside Alison Brie (“Community”) and showrunners Ian Roberts and Jay Martel (“Key and Peele”).
Matt Miller and Cap Gun TV also serve as executive producers of “Teachers.”

The official word: Worldwide basketball star LeBron James and business partner Maverick Carter are set to executive produce ESPN Films' and Disney XD's new special "Becoming," a half-hour show for kids and families profiling the inspirational journeys of today's top athletes.
"Becoming" will debut SUNDAY, OCTOBER 26 (8:00 p.m., ET/PT) on Disney XD and is in development for an ongoing series. Produced in association with ESPN Films and LeBron James' Springhill Production Company, the pilot will tell the story of the NBA champion's trajectory to the top and reflect the spirit of his accomplishments, including some of the most defining and triumphant moments of his life.
"I'm really excited about helping develop 'Becoming' and bringing this kind of program to kids," said LeBron James. "Sports and athletes were my inspiration growing up. It was the stories about Michael Jordan, Deion Sanders, and Allen Iverson that kept me dreaming. When I learned that they had some of the same struggles and challenges I did, it made everything seem possible. That's what 'Becoming' is all about."
"This is a very exciting project for Springhill Production Company," said Maverick Carter, co-founder and partner of Springhill Production Company. "We are looking at a variety of projects and this was an obvious choice. It's so true to the type of content for kids we want to do. ESPN Films understands how to bring sports stories alive. We do a lot of work with different projects focusing on kids, and the demand for programming like this is obvious."
The official word: As part of its ongoing effort to enhance its diverse portfolio of premium content, Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF), a premier next generation global content leader, is teaming with Facebook, the prestigious Women In Film organization, the crowdsourcing platform Tongal and best-selling Twilight Saga author Stephenie Meyer to create and manage a social media campaign to develop and produce a series of short films directed by aspiring female filmmakers.

The campaign will center on a multiphase contest culminating in the selection of at least five aspiring female filmmakers to direct short films based on characters from the Twilight universe. While I have made unhappy note of it before, I bring up the show once more because it premieres tonight at 10 on CBS. Some may see its portrayal of ugly, violent crimes as a reasonable companion to "Criminal Minds." I am not a fan of that show, either, but "Stalker" is even more extreme in its presentation, and especially in its misogyny.
I have been thinking a lot lately about violence in a more general way. I grew up watching TV westerns with their gunplay and fistfights, wallowed in the films of Peckinpah and Scorsese, was amused by the extremes in the climax of "Scarface." But instead of being numbed by all that violence, I seem to have become more sensitive to it, more uneasy when it feels excessive or gratuitous -- not explaning a character or a context but simply reveling in the extremes of it.
I have been reminded of Dan Fienberg's line about "Stalker," that it's for people who liked the awful violence of "The Following" but did care for Kevin Bacon or found the Edgar Allen Poe allusions too literary. Too much of the audience is now from Generation Slasher, schooled in "Friday the 13th" or the "Saw" films, and equating grotesqueness with art. I have been tilting the other way, and "Stalker" tilted me all the way over -- not because of its explicitness, which could be considered somewhat mild, but because of its smirking cruelty. .To read more or comment...
