Chatting With Joshua Malina

By admin Published: April 29, 2011

Joshua Malina ("Sports Night," "The West Wing" and many guest-starring roles on TV) has lately neen on "In Plain Sight," which begins a new season at 10 p.m. Sunday on USA Network. The series stars Mary McCormack -- another "West Wing" alum -- as federal marshal Mary Shannon, working in the witness-protection program in Albuquerque, NM; Malina is Peter Alpert, boyfriend of Shannon's often troubled sister Brandi (Nichole Hiltz). Malina and I talked (and laughed) recently about "IPS," Malina's funny Internet series "Backwash," his ongoing pranking with Bradley Whitford and other topics. After the jump, excerpts.

Friday Morning Notebook

By admin Published: April 29, 2011

I'm not much of a royals watcher and, as important as today's wedding appears to be to a lot of people, I had a difficult time generating much enthusiasm. I did set a DVR to pick up the BBC early morning feed. Then I rolled out of bed in time to see the main ceremony. (I am also at this moment seeing the couple wave to the crowd.) The best I can say is, some fancy show. There is indeed something to be said for pomp, especially spectacular high-definition pomp. The dress was tasteful. Done. And thank goodness for more advanced technology; I remember seeing the Charles-Diana wedding under more rigorous circumstances -- no DVR, no HD.

But, in the scheme of my television things, the wedding was far less important to me than last night's farewell to Michael Scott on "The Office." (Spoilers after the jump.)

My "Idol" Thoughts -- and "The Voice"

By admin Published: April 28, 2011

The overnight e-mail included a release touting the nine-song iTunes package of songs from Wednesday's performances of Carole King's songs. I keep staring at the list and, with the possible exception of James Durbin's "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," see nothing I would want to hear again. In fact, I am at the point where I am just fed up with "Idol." Not only is the music mostly mediocre, at best, it is part of a bad show -- redundant judges, poor presentation (technical issues for a singer two weeks in a row) and contestants whose rare moments of genuine feeling are squashed under tightly edited and forced cuteness. All that, and disastrously bad duets. I will elaborate after the jump.

A Donald Trump Flashback

By admin Published: April 28, 2011

I have been watching the recent Donald Trump events with a combination of astonishment, dismay and (I try) amusement. The relationship between Trump and the truth has, of course, been much discussed lately. But to Trump watchers, this is his standard procedure: If you say something with enough certainty, it does not matter if it is true or not. Just maintain your level of certainty, treat everyone else as wrong and keep moving.

This, of course, includes entertainment matters as well as financial and political ones. In 2004, Trump was part of a press conference I attended to promote the second season of "The Apprentice," which had been a significant hit for NBC. But significant was not enough for Trump.

Goodbye, Michael Scott

By admin Published: April 28, 2011

"When I was originally asked to audition [for 'The Office'], I had no idea how beloved the BBC version was. And had I known that, I would have been scared out of my mind, because [Ricky Gervais] ... created this archetype character, and there was no way I or anybody else was going to do it as well or better than he did. So I was just going in to try to do something that was funny and slightly different than his take on it." - Steve Carell, July 24, 2005

I am feeling very sentimental about the departure of Carell's Michael Scott from "The Office" tonight. Some of that stems from Carell being so likable-- and giving one of the great acceptance speeches at the Television Critics Association awards in 2006 -- reading from a scathing review of his work in an earlier series.

TBS Orders New Tyler Perry Sitcom

"For Better or Worse" will aim at young adults; "House of Payne" is wrapping up. TBS is vague about when "Payne" will be done; it still has new episodes and schedules them occasionally. The official word: TBS has ordered 10 episodes of the new series Tyler Perry’s For Better or Worse from Tyler Perry Studios. The dramedy, based on Perry’s hit Why Did I Get Married? films, marks the third Tyler Perry series to come to TBS, which is also home to Tyler Perry’s House of Payne and Meet the Browns. As with House of Payne and Meet the Browns, syndication will be sold by Debmar Mercury.

NGC Sets "Restrepo" Replay 4/25

By admin Published: April 21, 2011

As you may have heard, the filmmaker behind the Oscar-nominated documentary has died. The movie is available on DVD and Blu-ray, and will be shown on National Geographic Channel on Monday.

The official word: Following yesterday’s tragic news that photojournalist and filmmaker Tim Hetherington died while covering the ongoing combat in Libya, the National Geographic Channel has announced an encore of his award-winning documentary, Restrepo, expanded for television and airing Monday, April 25, 2011, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The broadcast will include a special tribute to Hetherington. The powerful documentary was nominated for an Academy Award for Documentary Feature this year and was also a Grand Prize Jury Winner at the Sundance Film Festival.

Restrepo chronicles the deployment of U.S. troops in the Korengal Valley, one of the most dangerous outposts in Afghanistan. The movie focuses on a remote 15-man outpost, Restrepo, named after a platoon medic who was killed in action. Starting in June 2007, Hetherington, along with co-producer and co-director Sebastian Junger, made 10 trips to the Korengal. They did everything the soldiers did except pull guard duty and shoot back during firefights. They slept alongside the soldiers, ate with them, survived the boredom and the heat and the cold and the flies with them, went on patrol with them and eventually came to be considered virtually part of the platoon. By the end of the deployment, they had shot a total of 150 hours of combat, boredom, humor, terror and daily life at the outpost.

Restrepo is an entirely experiential film: The cameras never leave the valley; there are no interviews with generals or diplomats. It is the story. in their own words, of a group of men who came to be considered the “tip of the spear” for America’s efforts in that area. The film’s only goal is to make viewers feel as if they have just been through a 90-minute deployment. This is war, full stop.

FX Sets Return "Rescue Me" & "Louie," Debut of "Wilfred"

By admin Published: April 20, 2011

The official word: FX has set its summer schedule with the return of two critically acclaimed original series and the premiere of a new original comedy. Wilfred, FX’s newest original comedy, and the second season of Louie will premiere on Thursday, June 23 at 10:00 PM ET/PT and 10:30 PM ET/PT, respectively. Rescue Me returns for its final season on Tuesday, July 12 at 10:00 PM ET/PT.

Debuting on Thursday, June 23 at 10 PM, Wilfred, starring Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings trilogy) and Jason Gann, is a live-action comedy series based on the critically acclaimed Australian series of the same title. Wilfred was adapted for FX by David Zuckerman (Family Guy, American Dad), who wrote the pilot and serves as Executive Producer/Showrunner. Elijah Wood stars as “Ryan,” an introvert struggling to make his way in the world until he meets “Wilfred” (played by Gann, co-creator of the Australian series), his neighbor’s canine pet. Wilfred marks Wood’s first starring role in regular series television. Executive Producers are Rich Frank, Paul Frank and Jeff Kwatinetz of Prospect Park, along with Joe Connor and Ken Connor of Renegade, producers of the Australian version of Wilfred. Gann serves as Co-Executive Producer. The series is produced by FX Productions. FX will air 13 episodes of Wilfred.

TCM Sets Lumet Tribute

By admin Published: April 12, 2011

Lumet is a director worth remembering, not only for his screen work but for his writing about his work, which was also clear-eyed and impressive. I like every single movie that TCM is including in its tribute; I still remember seeing the relatively little-known "The Hill" at campus screenings in college. And there are still more Lumets worth revisiting, such as "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead," "The Verdict" and "Fail Safe."

Local Movie, "Boys Pull Your Pants Up," Showing Saturday

By admin Published: April 7, 2011

The official word: New movies open every week in Hollywood, where often the big studios decide to pull out all the stops and throw an old-fashioned, full-blown Hollywood premiere (sometimes called "special screenings"). Movie stars arrive in stretch limousines in front of the theatre, to the applause of an adoring crowd. TV reporters interview stars, while photographers shoot photos of the celebrities on the red carpet, before they go inside. Most of these special movie premieres take place along Hollywood Boulevard or in Westwood Village, but you can be present for the next big event which takes place right here in Akron, Ohio. Read on, and I'll tell you how.

Banks of Jordan Entertainment & UMR Productions will present their BOYS PULL YOUR PANTS UP movie premier written and directed by Jewelene Banks. Banks has taken her novel and stage play to a whole new level as she reaches a wider audience and heads for television and movie theaters. The message is powerful as it brings to life the unforgettable story of Clyde (Kelvin Lawrence) Clara (Karen Stallings) and their supporting Aunt Maggie's (Harlonda Banks) struggle to save their son Carlos (Rodelle Bolar) and other children from sagging pants, acts of sex, drugs, violence, and gritty hustles. It's only when Carlos flees from the clutches of his disgruntled father and bumps into his thug-life friends Papa Bear (Randy Clark) and Chicken Bone (Luddie Carmichael) that his life takes a turn for the worst. Winner of numerous awards, “Boys Pull Your Pants Up” is an educational, intense and brilliant portrayal of one family's struggle for redemption, inspiration and atonement.

"American Idol" and Other Notes

By admin Published: April 7, 2011

The blog has been a bit underserved of late, thanks in part to Charlie Sheen's appearance in Cleveland, and even more because of the final throes of my master's thesis. But entertainment goes on.

I was thinking about Sheen today and wanted to mention that, even with all the craziness around him, much of it of his own creation, that you can find some more than capable acting performances and decent movies on his resume. Look for "Major League," of course; "Platoon," "Eight Men Out," "Wall Street" (I don't know about the sequel but there's enough interest in it that the Akron library has 42 copies -- and 192 holds on them as of this morning), "Lucas" and "Rated X," a TV movie from 2000 with Sheen and brother Emilio Estevez as the notorious Mitchell brothers.

By admin Published: April 6, 2011

And, sight unseen, this epitomizes everything that is wrong with "Glee" right now: pursuit of hot tunes to shoehorn into episodes, instead of focusing on character and writing in a way that once made the show so effective.
