Bill Moyers/Acorn Media DVD Deal

By admin Published: June 28, 2010

From the announcement:

Acorn Media U.S. is proud to announce a select partnership with Bill Moyers and his production company, Public Affairs Television, to bring many of his acclaimed programs to DVD under the Athena documentary line. Bill Moyers is an award-winning journalist with more than 30 Emmys and a Lifetime Peabody Award among his accolades. He recently retired his acclaimed weekly series on PBS, Bill Moyers Journal, but he and Public Affairs Television will continue to produce new specials and miniseries for distribution.

Building on the success of the Acorn Media (British TV) and Acacia (fitness) brands, Acorn Media U.S. launched Athena, a new DVD brand for consumers interested in lifelong learning through documentary programming, in June 2009. Athena will release the first two multi-part programs, Genesis: A Living Conversation and Bill Moyers on Faith & Reason, on November 9, 2010, with other programs being released over the next three years. Though some of the series have had limited release in the educational market, this will be the first opportunity for consumers to purchase the acclaimed series.

Continues after the jump.

Acorn Media U.S. President Mark Stevens said, “The Bill Moyers catalog offers a wealth of opportunities for us to expand our range of programming for the Athena line. Athena provides a consistent, educational, and entertaining experience for the lifelong learner, and we are delighted to work with Public Affairs Television to bring these important titles to the marketplace.”

First releases:

· Genesis: A Living Conversation (1996) – This ten-hour series was produced to stimulate interfaith dialogue in a democratic spirit. Writers, artists, psychologists, composers, lawyers, college presidents, journalists, translators, and Biblical scholars discuss, debate, and discover the great stories of Genesis. The series includes dramatic readings by Mandy Patinkin and Alfre Woodard.

· Bill Moyers on Faith & Reason (2006) – In the tradition of the landmark series Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth, this series features provocative conversations with unique voices drawn from the group assembled at the PEN World Voices Festival in New York. Moyers takes viewers on a rare journey deep into these writers’ work and their own experience to plumb new ways of thinking about the role of religion in shaping our world. Interviews include Salman Rushdie, Margaret Atwood, Martin Amis, and more.

Over the next three years, Athena will release at least 13 other programs, including In Search of the Constitution, A World of Ideas, Amazing Grace, The Wisdom of Faith with Huston Smith, Moyers on America, On Our Own Terms: Moyers on Dying, God and Politics, Becoming American: The Chinese Experience, and The Language of Life.

For almost four decades, Bill Moyers has been recognized as one of the unique voices of his generation. Together with his wife and creative partner, Judith Davidson Moyers, he formed Public Affairs Television in 1986. Moyers has received more than 30 Emmys®; two prestigious Gold Batons from the Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia University Awards; nine Peabodys; among many other accolades.

Separate from this partnership, Athena is also releasing Bill Moyers’ The Power of Myth with Joseph Campbell on September 21, 2010. Athena’s previous releases include Playing Shakespeare, The Story of Math, Testament, Six Centuries of Verse, as well as upcoming releases Venice Revealed, World War I in Color, and Monarchy: The Complete Series.
