Steve Harvey Reportedly Leaving Stand-Up in 2012

By admin Published: November 30, 2011

You can find one report about his announcement here. (I wanted to access the Eurweb report but could not.) I'm kind of bummed. Sure, the former Clevelander is doing fine as a radio talker, TV host and best-selling philosopher. But I remember seeing him do standup in 1994 and he tore up the room.

After the jump is my Beacon Journal story about that moment.

A Chat With Josh Krajcik -- And A Footnote

By admin Published: November 30, 2011

Yesterday I talked with "X Factor's" (and Wooster's) Josh Krajcik. You can find the story here. I pretty much emptied my notebook for the story, since it was the first extended interview I've had with him. And I liked the guy. Asked if he thought he was set career-wise now that he has been on "X Factor," he said, "It's a springboard. And it's not that I'm just set. I'm gonna have to bust my ass. But, you know, I think if I do I'll be able to work. And if I can work, I'll be happy."

But there was one little bit that I did not use there and will include here.

The Bummer of "Cowboys and Aliens"

By admin Published: November 29, 2011

"Cowboys and Aliens" ranked very high on my want-to-see list this year purely on the strength of its title. My explanation of my enthusiasm was simple (and repeated often, to my family's growing annoyance): "It's got cowboys. It's got aliens." The title seemed to promise an inspired blending of fantasy and utter goofiness: cowboys in conflict with extraterrestrials. If it could manage the tone of something like "Paul," it would be a fine time in the multiplex. And, with Jon Favreau directing, the right tone seemed quite possible.

Unfortunately, I did not get to the movie in a theater and so waited for the recent arrival of the Blu-ray, which is in stores on Dec. 6. The Blu-ray, in fact, includes a longer version than the one shown in theaters. Which, alas, did not prove to be a good thing.

Ken Russell, R.I.P.

By admin Published: November 29, 2011

The news came out yesterday that director Ken Russell died. He was, to put it mildly, one of the great madmen of film and for a time a much-debated character. David Thomson wrote about a decade ago that Russell was "oblivious of his own vulgarity and the triteness of his morbid misanthropy" and that, even in his seventies, Russell "showed no signs of moderation or being reasonable." Thomson, with the bit clamped in his teeth, also said that in some of Russell's work had "self-induced maniar, where visual grotesqueness has swamped intellect or feelings." The somewhat more restrained and admiring "Film Encyclopedia" nonetheless noted "his reputation for flamboyance, unpredictability and excesses" and that his films "are often coarse, symbol-ridden, pretentious, and confusing."

Indeed, when you look at his film credits, you are repeatedly smacked by excess: "Lair of the White Worm," "Whore," "Tommy" (a ruinous attempt at making a film of the Who's rock opera), "The Devils." And yet there are moments that hold up. "Women in Love," from the D.H. Lawrence novel, was rich in sexual currents, especially in contrast to other films from 40 years ago. The movie had its dull stretches -- lingering memories from when I saw it in college include a lot of talking -- but it was still a serious, even thoughtful work and one that does indeed linger all these years later.

FX Sets Returns of "Justified," "Archer," Premiere of "Unsupervised"

By admin Published: November 28, 2011

FX, basic cable’s leader for scripted programming year-round, has announced release dates for two of its returning hits, as well as a brand new animated comedy series.

FX opens the new year with the return of the Emmy Award®-winning hit drama Justified on January 17, and will continue to run Tuesdays at 10 PM ET/PT. Starring Timothy Olyphant as “U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens,” Justified is based on the works of crime novelist Elmore Leonard, including Leonard’s short story Fire in the Hole. The end of Season 2 brought about the end of the Bennett family’s hold over Harlan County and the return of Raylan’s old nemesis/friend Boyd Crowder to the criminal life. This season, Boyd and his crew will find they aren’t the only ones making a play to rule the Harlan underworld. Now Raylan finds himself facing off against dirty politics, hidden fortunes, a mysterious man named “Limehouse” and an enterprising and lethal criminal from the Motor City. Earlier this year, Justified was nominated for four Emmy Awards, with Margo Martindale taking home the statue for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. Developed by Graham Yost, who also wrote the pilot, Justified is Executive Produced by Yost, Leonard, Fred Golan, Sarah Timberman, Carl Beverly and Michael Dinner, who directed the pilot episode and others. Justified is produced by Sony Pictures Television and FX Productions.

WKYC Adds Erin Kennedy as Morning Co-Anchor

By admin Published: November 28, 2011

This, the latest in local early-shift moves, certainly indicates that the dawn (and pre-dawn) patrol is a growth area for TV stations even in these financially difficult times. Hollie Strano will continue on the show, but Kennedy's addition marks the first time Mark Nolan has had a co-host since Abby Ham departed the show in June 2009.

The official word: Award winning journalist Erin Kennedy will bring her high energy and strong storytelling skills to the Channel 3 morning newscast beginning in January. She’ll join the team of Mark Nolan, meteorologist Hollie Strano, reporters Amanda Barren and Stephanie Coueignoux, and Ways to Save guru Matt Granite. “I’m looking forward to becoming part of such a terrific morning show,” said Ms. Kennedy. “And I'm excited to work with such a strong and enterprising news team. More than anything, I value Channel 3's commitment to making a difference in the Northeast Ohio community. My husband and I can't wait to put down roots in this dynamic and progressive city."

"I'm Dickens - He's Fenster" on DVD!

By admin Published: November 28, 2011

"I'm Dickens - He's Fenster" was one of my favorite shows. When I was 11. But my guess is that it will still make me laugh, since I catch myself still chuckling over the remembered line these many years later. We shall see.

The official word (and you can see more at www.dickensandfensterdvd.com): TV Time Machine Productions, Lightyear Entertainment and eOne Distribution are proud to announce that the brilliant but short-lived 1962 ABC TV situation comedy, I’m Dickens…He’s Fenster, starring John Astin (The Addams Family) and Marty Ingels (The Dick Van Dyke Show), is now available for the first time on DVD.

The show was created by Leonard Stern (writer/producer on The Honeymooners, Get Smart, Sgt. Bilko) who, in the early 1950’s, co-created with publishing partner Roger Price, the phenomenally successful kids word game Mad Libs. Stern also helped launch the TV careers on I’m Dickens… He’s Fenster of such stars as John Astin, Yvonne Craig (Batgirl on Batman), Jim Nabors (Gomer Pyle, USMC) and many more (see full listing below)

Looking Back at News Management

By admin Published: November 21, 2011

I was flipping through Steven M. Gillon's book "Pearl Harbor: FDR Leads the Nation into War," which looks at Roosevelt in the hours immediately following the attack (and will also be a History channel special). I found this passage of particular interest:

"Roosevelt exercised nearly complete control over the flow of information. With the exception of a few radio reports that made it to the mainland, there was little or no independent information about events in Hawaii. ... Unlike the Kennedy assassination, or the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2011, when television spread the word around the country and the globe within minutes, news about Pearl Harbor spread slowly, trickling out over the radio in the afternoon. The attack took place during the traditional Sunday dinner hour on the East Coast and in the Midwest, which meant that most people did not have their radios on. . . . It was not until later in the afternoon, when the 'extra' editions of daily newspapers hit the streets with their screaming headlines, that the entire nation learned of the assault.

Looking Back at "Super 8"

By admin Published: November 21, 2011

The J.J. Abrams/Steven Spielberg effort arrives on DVD and Blu-ray on Tuesday. If you are considering buying or renting it, here is my review of the film when it landed in theaters. I gave it three stars.

The review: Super 8 is a monster movie that is least interesting when it actually has to deal with the monster. It is at its best as a heartfelt look at families and getting over grief and loss — and when it is propelling the audience along with a series of thrills leading to the climax.

Original Oscar Winner "Wings" On Video in January

By admin Published: November 15, 2011

The official word: Paramount Home Entertainment kicks off the studio's centennial celebration in 2012 by releasing the inaugural Best Picture Academy Award® winner WINGS for the first time ever on Blu-ray™ and DVD January 24, 2012. Meticulously restored to give fans the chance to view the visually stunning epic in pristine condition, the 1927 World War I drama explores the devastating effects of war through the story of two men who go off to battle and the woman they both leave behind. Featuring groundbreaking aerial dogfights and epic battle sequences, WINGS is both a cinematic spectacle and a compelling story of love and sacrifice that effectively dramatizes the bitter wages of war. The historic piece of cinema stars Clara Bow, Charles "Buddy" Rogers and Richard Arlen, and also features Gary Cooper in one of his first feature film roles.

The filming of WINGS was a major undertaking for Paramount Pictures when it began shooting in September of 1926. Because the studio planned to make the film a major roadshow feature, executives immediately cast the top film star of the day, Clara Bow. However, director William Wellman wanted to cast lesser-known actors around Bow and ultimately chose Buddy Rogers and Richard Arlen, as well as the unknown Gary Cooper in a small, but key role.

Catching Up With "Glee"

By admin Published: November 9, 2011

In my online video last week, I mentioned my distaste for the teacher/student lip-lock on "Glee." But that was not the only time the show felt off-kilter this year, indicating once again that the makers had a good idea for one season but lost all inspiration in the second.

This week's episode seemed a rebound, albeit one which still had problems. Julia Fuller, a reader of some of my ramblings, asked an obvious question: Why did the school's production of "West Side Story" seem to consist of kids from New Directions? Yes, Santana is in the splinter group now, but still -- weren't there students at the school who embrace musical theater but not show choir? Of course, there are many times when McKinley seems to be the least populated high school in Ohio, its student body consisting of a few small and overlapping groups.
