E.J. Thomas hall lists upcoming events

The official word: E.J. Thomas is proud to announce a spectacular season for the Akron community including a North American  pre-Broadway premiere of THE ILLUSIONISTS: Witness the Impossible; vocal sensations and winners of “The Sing Off” PENTATONIX, who are selling out houses nationwide; the original cast of Jersey Boys in MIDTOWN MEN;  Arlo Guthrie in ALICES’S RESTAURANT 50th ANNIVERSARY TOUR;  Young Croatian cellist sensations 2CELLOS; and respected broadcast journalist JANE PAULEY to highlight just a few of the season headliners.

 

The Broadway Season showcases three in the series plus three special presentations that include THE ILLUSIONISTS:  Witness the Impossible, A mind blowing spectacular showcasing the jaw dropping talents of seven illusionists as recently seen on AMERICAS GOT TALENT;  GUYS and DOLLS, an oddball romantic comedy; CAMELOT, one of Lerner and Loewe’s most legendary musicals; THE MIDTOWN MEN, starring the four original cast members of Jersey Boys bringing their signature sound of sixties tunes; BALLROOM WITH A TWIST, starring Dancing with the Stars Pros, So You Think You Can Dance and American Idol Finalists; and THE PRICE IS RIGHT, a hit interactive stage show that asks the audience to “Come On Down.”

 

The University of Akron Forum Series is celebrating its 20th Year this year and will be presenting seven speakers including PAUL THEROUX, China – The Years Between Mao and Modernism; PIPER KERMAN – Orange is the New Black; JANE PAULEY – Your Life Calling; Melissa Harris-Perry, a political commentator with a focus on African-American politics; DR. MICHAEL ERIC DYSON, a religious and cultural studies scholar; JACK HANNA’s INTO THE WILD LIVE!; and NEIL DEGRASSE TYSON,  Host of Cosmos:  A SpaceTime Odyssey.

 

The Contemporaries is a series of innovative, provocative, edgy trend setting artists and includes six different performers who are generating critical acclaim. DESSA, rapper, singer and spoken word artist  spins a delicate and expressive performance; LANGSTON HUGHES’ASK YOUR MAMA:  TWELVE MOODS FOR JAZZ is a multimedia concert performance celebrating the work of the  famed mid-20th century poet; THE HOT SARDINES take hot jazz, Dixieland and sprinklings of wartime Paris and melt them together for a musical surprise; THE NILE PROJECT showcases the diversity found in the peoples and cultures of the Nile Basin; GROUNDWORKS DANCETHEATER is a seamless blend of classical and modern dance; and CAMERON CARPENTER, a Keyboard and organist extraordinaire bringing to Akron his international touring organ.

 

STAGE DOOR at EJ transforms backstage into an intimate setting where the audience and the artist are close and personal allowing for a unique experience rarely encountered.  PAINTING MUSIC:  AL BRIGHT AND THE JOE AUGUSTINE TRIO will be a combination of abstract painting to the jazz of Joe Augustine; THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES is the UA’s benefit performance of Eve Ensler’s ground breaking play that celebrates women and their bodies; NATALIE MACMASTER in Visions from Cape Breton & Beyond – A Celtic Family Celebration, stars fiddlers MacMaster and Leahy returning to EJ with a new performance that showcases their children along  with singers and dancers from their hometowns; and THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON”S JAZZFEST 2015:  HORNSPIRIATION with special guest Howard Johnson.

 

EJ UpClose provides a special experience with orchestra only seating.  ASPEN SANTA FE BALLET blends contemporary athleticism with classical ballet; RECYCLED PERCUSSION is taking a break from their Las Vegas run and bringing their junk rock to Akron;  and ARLO GUTHRIE, brings his ALICES RESTAURANT 50th ANNIVERSARY TOUR to the EJ stage.

 

Variety series brings PENTATONIX, the vocal sensations and winners of Season 3 of NBC’s “The Sing-Off” to Thomas Hall and is sure to be a sell-out;  An Evening with JACKSON BROWNE showcases his new album, Standing In The Breach; BASTILLE is the hot indie band from England who took the UK by storm; JINGLE JAZZ plus JAZZ NUTCRACKER with the UA Dance Company & The 35th  ANNUAL TUBACHRISTMAS with bring in the holiday season with smiles; and 2CELLOS features young Croatian cellists Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser who take classical and pop to a new level of amazing!

 

UPNEXT features UA programming including COLLAGE 2014; THE SNOW MAIDEN; UA BAND CLINIC CONCERT; MONSTERPIANOS; THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON DANCE COMPANY; THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON STEEL DRUM BAND with guest Mia Gormandy; and  THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON SYMPHONIC BAND with pianist Philip Thomson.
