Estelle Reiner, R.I.P.

By admin Published: October 30, 2008

The wife of Carl Reiner, and mother of Rob Reiner, has died at the age of 94. Brief obit here. She and Carl had been married since 1943. While she had small parts in a few movies, and was a jazz singer, she is probably best remembered for her line in the Rob-directed "When Harry Met Sally." Here's the scene:

Don't Pay the Ransom, I've Escaped

By admin Published: October 24, 2008

My schedule has been a little crazed since Wednesday night, when I drove north to see "High School Musical 3." (See my review here.) I liked the original "HSM," was somewhat disappointed by the second and was really done with the third. Anyway, I have slowly been catching up on viewing, including "Survivor" and the sweet, sad "The Office" from last night, and hope to post something extensive later today.

Tuesday Morning Notebook

By admin Published: October 21, 2008

On the link, Alec Baldwin talks, a bit testily, about Sarah Palin's "Saturday Night Live" appearance. He makes a reasonable point about how you treat people when you are face to face -- or when you are their TV host. It reminds me of a long-ago conversation with the notorious Morton Downey Jr. As abrasive as he could be on his own show, he said he dialed it down while appearing on others'. After all, he said, he was their guest.

A Little More "HIMYM": "The Bro Code"

By admin Published: October 14, 2008

In bookstores today is "The Bro Code" (Fireside, $13), a collection of aphorisms and life rules attributed to Barney Stimson, played so zestfully by Neil Patrick Harris on "How I Met Your Mother." As you might expect, lines that would sound good on the show do not appear so charming when decorating page after page after page of text. Also, I worry that some casual readers will take this seriously -- especially because it includes a detailed Hot/Crazy scale as well as current Hot Chick ratings. But here and there it made me laugh. One example:

Where I Have Been

By admin Published: October 8, 2008

Haven't forgotten all of you. It has just been a crazy couple of days and nights. Yesterday evening included a trip to Cleveland to see "Body of Lies." Today I had a class, wrote a review, went and spoke to a class, then headed up near Cleveland for a really nice chat with impressionist Frank Caliendo. And I have some reading to do tonight. But I will have some thoughts coming by tomorrow,  including about "Life on Mars" (thumbs up), "Kath and Kim" (thumb not up -- yet) and a new episode of "The Office."

"HIMYM": When You're in Love With a Jersey Girl

By admin Published: October 7, 2008

"How I Met Your Mother" was sort of OK for most of last night. Didn't think the Robin subplot was all that effective (until it took that turn at the end), and the New Jersey vs. New York battle kind of dragged -- except for Marshall's speech. But then it turned me around with the use of "Jersey Girl," the Tom Waits song redone so endearingly by Bruce Springsteen. (See and hear, above.) A great fave, and well used -- although I don't think the show would want people to revisit the line about "we're gonna take that little brat of yours and drop her off at your mom's." Still, a great save.

"The Ex List"

By admin Published: October 3, 2008

As I mentioned in a previous post, "The Ex List" -- premiering tonight -- has parted ways with Diane Ruggiero, a very talented writer ("Veronica Mars") whom I credit with the good things in the series pilot. So I don't expect it to live up to the quality of tonight's telecast. That said, it is fairly good, and there's a nice turn by Eric Balfour. And some of the content, as I mentioned before, may have you either giggling or googling. Also, look for the nice promo set to Queen's "Somebody to Love" over at CBS.com.
