Mixed Notes Thursday

By Rich Heldenfels Published: January 31, 2013

New today is my interview with Pauil Reiser about his return to standup, including a gig in Cleveland this weekend. And there is my review of "Amour," Oscar-nominated for best picture and other awards. This week's mailbag is here. And, if you missed the news yesterday, there's a piece about James Renner's novel getting a movie deal.

I has planned to write longer about "30 Rock," which ends its run tonight. Part of the challenge in doing so is that NBC sent out an extensive list of things it asked not be talked about, including some of the funniest bits. So let's leave it at this: The finale -- an hour of two back-to-back episodes -- is nicely done, with a number of callbacks to the show's past -- as well as a reference to series finales generally, so keep watching until the very end. I have gone hot and cold on the show, especially last season, but have been back more frequently of late, and enjoyed this wrapup.

Mixed Notes Wednesday

By Rich Heldenfels Published: January 30, 2013

Jim Nabors has married his longtime partner. There's a story about it here, including an interview with Nabors, where he talks about being openly gay to co-workers and friends, but considering it a "personal thing" that he didn't discuss more widely. From the article:

"I haven't ever made a public spectacle of it. Well, I've known since I was a child, so, come on.  It's not that kind of a thing.  I've never made a huge secret of it at all," Nabors said.
"This is really no big deal.  My friend and I, my partner, we went through all of this 38 years ago," Nabors added. "So I mean, we made our vows and that was it.  It was to each other, but nevertheless, we were a couple."
Asked if he had any advice to young gays and lesbians just beginning to deal with their sexual orientation, he said: "I really don't have any advice.  I don't think I'm qualified because I just could handle it my own way.  And you don't ever understand what people look down on you, or say cruel things to you about that sort of thing, but nevertheless, that's just life, and you just have to get above it."

Monday Notebook

By Rich Heldenfels Published: January 28, 2013

Busy weekend. Spent part of it on a Sunday shift, and over at Ohio.com you can find my writing about a steel-drum event and about a vigil for a local 4-year-old who died recently. Also, a column about "The Americans," premiering on FX later this week, and the weekly DVD/Blu-ray column, this one noting that season 3 of "Downton Abbey" will be available tomorrow. (A list of other Tuesday releases is here.)

Speaking of which, is "Downton Abbey" the most mispronounced TV title at the moment. Yet again this morning, I heard a local anchor refer to it as "Downtown." That was in a discussion of the Screen Actors Guild awards, the winners of which you can find here  And those awards are yet another indication that "Argo" is a runaway train heading into the Oscars.

Tuesday Notebook

By Rich Heldenfels Published: January 22, 2013

I took a long weekend, mainly because I have to work this coming weekend, so the bride and I had a chance to take care of a few things and relax. This does not mean I was absent from the paper. See this piece about things Beacon Journal critics have said over the years with this sidebar of reviews of Oscar-winnning movies. I had my weekly DVD column, including some thoughts about "Searching for Sugar Man" and the disturbing, effective "Compliance." I also had a review of "The Following," which premiered last night, in Sunday's Beacon Journal; it does not appear to have made it to Ohio.com so I have posted the text below*.

Getting back to the weekend, the Christmas tree is finally down, the ornaments packed for a trip back to storage. We caught up on some of our usual viewing, and a few different things. "Taken 2" on DVD: Wow, what a waste of cinema. The first movie moved quickly; it was amusing pulp. This one was slow, even sluggish; it took about half an hour to get all the plot elements in place and start the action. We also tried "Won't Back Down": much as I like Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis, it didn't take long to feel that we knew every note the movie was going to hit, and went on our way. (Our way, by the way, included a trip to Mountaineer, where I learned how much I could lose in penny slots in short order.) And there was a lot of football watching on Sunday, more than I at first planned.

The official word: Amy buys a thrift store wedding dress and is the only one who likes it, while Anne discovers that her ex, David, might be the biological father of Robie. An all-day marathon of “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” will air on Monday, March 18 from 11:00 AM – 8:00 PM ET/PT, leading into the premiere of the final season, starting at 8:00 PM ET/PT.

In the all-new episode, “To Each Her Own,” Amy and Ricky continue planning their wedding, so Amy buys her dress – at a thrift store. The dress is a little worse for wear – but only Amy sees the potential to make it great. Meanwhile, Ricky is upset about the dress and Adrian thinks the dress reflects her feelings about getting married. Kathy is conflicted about going back home after having the baby, and Ethan begs his parents to let him fly to Texas with her to ask Kathy’s parents if she can stay. Jack is still recovering and is in love with Grace. George tells Anne about seeing David with biological children, which makes her question Robie’s paternity. And George and Kathleen run into guest star, Chaz Bono (playing himself), at a restaurant where they are discussing whether Robie is George or David’s child.

Friday Notebook

By Rich Heldenfels Published: January 18, 2013

All the talk about Lance Armstrong and Manti Te'o, as well as some recent reading about Newtown "truthers," had me thinking about the whole issue of what we should and shouldn't believe in the culture. The result was this column. It was one of those white-heat deals, where I was burning to get the idea down, and piled up items for it, and could have said much more; at least one section of the final piece was much longer in an earlier draft. But here it is.

Another thing that came out of the researching and writng the column was our pop-culture divide. I had seen the term catfishing before, but did not pay much attention until it came up in the Te'o discussion -- after which I looked, with something resembling awe, at clips from the "Catfish" TV show. But it still appears to be a term you can drop knowingly only to a limited audience; I have asked a bunch of people, including a group of college frreshmen, who did not know exactly what catfishing is. While that may change, it's a reminder of our cultural divides -- how we don't always know how to talk to each other, because our frames of reference are so different.\

And Here I Thought I Just Had to Look for WGWG

By Rich Heldenfels Published: January 16, 2013

"Idol" fans and detractors have noted that the show, which returns tonight, has tended to belong to White Guys With Guitars in recent years. But Zimbio.com offered some other stats of note. Their official words:

Most Popular Unnatural Hair Color: Bright Red – Over the past decade, we’ve seen some crazy hair cross the stage on American Idol – neon blues, pinks and even a Cruella De Vil-type dye job in Season 7 (ahem, Amanda Overmeyer). But through it all, there have been an uncanny abundance of finalists who fancy bright red ‘dos, dating all the way back to Nikki McKibbin in Season 1. What better way to say “I’m on fire!” than to look the part?!

Monday Notes

By Rich Heldenfels Published: January 14, 2013

I am not a fan of the Golden Globes as awards, but ended up watching a fair amount of the ceremony: the marvelous humor of Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, the classy Anne Hathaway,  the hilarious Kristen Wiig and Will Ferrell, the grumpy Tommy Lee Jones, the genuinely bizarre (and angry) Jodie Foster. It wasn't enough to keep me from going to bed early (I had a class to teach this morning, after all) but it certainly offered an abundance of things to talk about.

For one: are the Globes so convinced that people watch the telecast for the craziness and the screwups that they go out of thier way to look inept?  Conisder the insanely long perp walks some winners had to make to get to the stage. Consider, too, how their awards cycle involves both films that they have seen but almost no one else has (like "Stand Up Guys"), and TV shows which have been seen and previously awarded. I mean, "Game Change" and "Homeland" AGAIN? Walk-off music while Daniel Day-Lewis is talking about Spielberg?

Sunday Notebook

If you have HBO, be sure to watch "Girls" tonight and in the weeks ahead. I have seen the first four, and the show is even better than it was in the first season. That is not to say things are better for the characters; in fact, it is rough going for most of them, including some really sad moments in the later episodes.

But some of the misery is also self-inflicted; one of the things I like about watching Hannah (Lena Dunham, the series creator/writer/director) is that she can be so thoroughly self-absorbed, and selfish, in ways that make you hate what she is doing while you understand exactly why she is doing it.

The top five films of 2012, according to Box Office Mojo, were "The Avengers," "Dark Knight Rises," "Hunger Games," "Sklyfall" and the final "Twilight," so draw your own conclusions. I will be curious whether that group collectively can muster as many nominations (including minor technical categories) as some of the big individual nominees.
