"Idol" Updates

By admin Published: March 27, 2007

Longer results shows coming, and a peek at the next guest coach ...

From Fox today:

The AMERICAN IDOL results show, continuing to feature performances by renowned musical artists who mentor the contestants each week, will expand from 30 minutes to one hour on the following dates: Wednesday, April 11 (9:00-10:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed); Wednesday, April 18 (9:00-10:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed); and Wednesday, May 2 (9:00-10:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed) on FOX. Upcoming mentors include Gwen Stefani, Tony Bennett, Jennifer Lopez, Martina McBride, Bon Jovi and Barry Gibb.

‘TIL DEATH, the comedy that looks at married life from the divergent perspectives of a long-married couple, played by Brad Garrett and Joely Fisher, and their neighbors who’ve been married for just a year, played by Eddie Kaye Thomas and Kat Foster, will conclude its first season with a special one-hour finale episode Wednesday, April 11 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX, leading into an expanded AMERICAN IDOL results show.

I've seen at least one claim that this is the result of "Idol's" recent inability to squeeze ousted contestants' sing-off into the half-hour format. Well, they could squeeze it in if they'd just scale back some other material -- the guest coach performances, say, or the product-placement car video. I suspect this is more a function of Fox wanting to dominate the entire 9 p.m. hour -- which it can do more effectively with "Idol" than with " 'Til Death."

Looking ahead, by the way, even though Fox tends to save its announcement of the following week's coach and theme until after the weekly results show, its online schedule says next week features Tony Bennett. And that top 9 will perform "songs considered to be American classics" -- another one of those anyone-can-find-something categories.

Also, I'll be attending a movie screening tonight so my "Idol" blog from the performance show will have to wait until late tonight or early tomorrow.
