It had originally been planned for NBC. The official word: Netflix, the world’s leading Internet TV network, has picked up two seasons and will be the exclusive home to Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, the new comedy series from Universal Television from co-creators Tina Fey and Robert Carlock.
The series stars Ellie Kemper (The Office) as a woman who escapes from a doomsday cult and starts life over in New York. The 13-episode first season was originally slated to premiere on NBC and instead will now launch exclusively across all Netflix territories in March 2015.
“The very construct of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt -- its offbeat premise, hilarious and rich characters and serialized storytelling -- make it a perfect Netflix comedy series,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content at Netflix. “Tina and Robert’s unique comic voice and sensibility come through in this series and we could not be more excited to present Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt exclusively to Netflix members around the world.”
“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to debut Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt exclusively on Netflix, which has proven to be such an outstanding place for distinctive, original programming, said Fey and Carlock. Happily, we will still collaborate with our longtime partners at Universal Television to fulfill Netflix's two-season order. We grew up at NBC and will continue to develop broadcast projects with them as well. We found the inspiration for this series in Ellie Kemper's shining all-American face, and we know that she and Kimmy Schmidt have found their best possible home at Netflix. To read more or comment...

Archer is an animated, half-hour comedy that revolves around an international spy agency and the lives of its employees. Jon Benjamin as the highly skilled and incredibly vain master spy “Sterling Archer;” Aisha Tyler as Archer’s fellow agent and ex-girlfriend, “Lana Kane;” Jessica Walter as Archer’s domineering mother and spy agency director, “Malory Archer;” Chris Parnell as the easily intimidated comptroller-turned secret agent “Cyril Figgis;” Judy Greer as Malory’s loquacious, dingbat secretary, “Cheryl;” Amber Nash as the discordant director of human resources, “Pam Poovey;” Adam Reed as the gay voice of reason, “Ray Gillette;” and Lucky Yates as the spy agency’s possibly mad scientist/ possibly clone of himself, “Krieger.”

The ABC News obit for the director and producer -- who was also the husband of ABC star DIane Sawyer -- is here. The New York Times obit is here. You can see a list of his screen credits on IMDB here. Below my notes I have posted the message ABC News President James Goldston sent out to staff.
Nichols was a director I went hot and cold about. Some things, like "Working Girl" and "Closer," were interesting but chilly; "Wolf" is an intriguing idea that does not hold up for the duration of the movie, much the way "The Birdcage" is funny but feels as if it could have been much funnier had it not seemed so calculated. "Heartburn" is an outright failure, "Catch-22" an exercise in unmanageable ambition, and I have absolutely no explanation of how "What Planet Are You From?" is on Nichols's resume.
But beside all those things are "Carnal Knowledge," a great movie about how thoroughly men misunderstand women, and "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf," and for TV "Angels in America." ("The Graduate" is considered something of a film landmark, though it has been a long time since I have seen it, so I am withholding judgment here.) There is "Postcards From the Edge," far from a perfect movie but one that can sneak up on you. That is helped of course by the performances of Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine, but Nichols was very, very good with actors, and not simply because he cast well. He knew there was something in Philip Seymour Hoffman that would work onscreen, and in Art Garfunkel. Streep worked with him more than once, and so did Jack Nicholson. Elizabeth Taylor won an Oscar when directed by Nichols. Dustin Hoffman became a star.
When we think of Nichols, we have to consider especially how well he directed women. That is demonstrated not only by the performances above, but by Sigourney Weaver in "Working Girl," Ann-Margret in "Carnal Knowledge," Cher in "Silkwood," Julia Roberts in "Charlie Wilson's War," Anne Bancroft in "The Graduate."To read more or comment...
The official word: Netflix, the worlds leading Internet TV network, has ordered a fourth season of the hit drama Longmire, from Warner Horizon Television. Ten new episodes of the series will premiere exclusively in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand in 2015.
“When Warner Horizon Television came to us with the idea for a new season of Longmire, we were intrigued because the series is so unique, and consistently great. We are thrilled to help continue Walt Longmires story for his large and passionate following,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content at Netflix.
In a joint statement, the Longmire executive producers said: “Were excited and honored to have the opportunity to bring this show that we love so much, and all its devoted fans, to Netflix.”
Season four of Longmire picks up moments after season threes exciting finale. Walt Longmire (series star Robert Taylor), having found out who was behind the murder of his wife, succumbs to his darker impulses and takes off in pursuit of the killer with murder on his mind. Meanwhile, Branch Connally (Bailey Chase), the deputy who Walt fired for erratic, violent behavior, believes he has already figured out who the real culprit is. But during his confrontation with this suspected killer, a gun goes off. Now the audience will finally learn what happened, and whether Walt can be stopped before he makes a fatal choice. To read more or comment...

Yesterday I posted pieces and links as I was chasing the "Hot in Cleveland" story. Here's a standard narrative I wrote later.
TV Land has cancelled its sitcom Hot in Cleveland. The current, sixth season will also be its last.
The series was a major leap forward for the network, which had been known mainly for repeating classic TV comedies. With Hot, which premiered in June 2010, it created a readymade classic by casting four TV-comedy veterans in the main roles: Jane Leeves (Frasier), Wendie Malick (Just Shoot Me), Valerie Bertinelli (One Day at a Time) and the scene-stealing master Betty White (The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Golden Girls).
In her late eighties when the series began, White underscored her status as a TV treasure while playing the bawdy, tough-talking Elka; White won two Screen Actors Guild Awards and scored an Emmy nomination for her performances.
The premise of the series made it seem as if there would be a lot of anti-Cleveland jokes: Three women from Los Angeles (Bertinelli, Malick and Leeves) stop in Cleveland and realize that, while they were no more than OK looking on the West Coast, they are considered, well, hot in Cleveland. (White played the only real Clevelander among the four, who nominally took care of their home.)To read more or comment...
Co-star Jane Leeves tweeted a wistful, Carol Burnett-invoking, "I'm so glad we had this time together."
Here's the statement from TV Land:
After five incredible seasons of “Hot in Cleveland,” the sixth season, currently in production, will be its last. It’s been an honor to work with Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves, Wendie Malick and the incomparable Betty White as well as our executive producers Suzanne Martin, Todd Milliner, Sean Hayes and the rest of our exceptional writers, production team and crew. The passion and talent they brought to the set each and every week over the past 5 years has put TV Land on the map as a network dedicated to quality original programming. We will continue to celebrate the show and are looking forward to a fantastic series finale. To read more or comment...

The official word: NYQ Books today announced that it has acquired RABBIT EARS: TV POEMS,the first anthology of poetry about the mass medium, and has
scheduled publication for spring 2015. The editor is Joel Allegretti.
The anthology contains 130 poems by 131 nationally known and emerging
poets (one poem is a collaborative effort). The title, named for the
pair of indoor TV antennae developed in the 1950s, comes courtesy of
former U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins.
Although past poetry anthologies have covered subjects as far afield
as war, music and even solitude, never before has one paid tribute to
the medium that has influenced America's tastes, opinions, politics,
language and lifestyles.
Rabbit Ears has that proverbial "something for everybody," according
to Raymond Hammond, NYQ Books editor-in-chief. For example: Vampire
fans can satisfy their desires with poems about Dark Shadows, Buffy
the Vampire Slayer and True Blood; Reality TV? The anthology gives
airtime to American Idol, Judge Judy and Jersey Shore, along with
other you-are-there fare; Iconic TV couples? Take a bow, Ozzie and
Harriet, Herman and Lily Munster, and Gomez and Morticia.
In addition, many personalities from the full spectrum of TV's
history grace the pages of Rabbit Ears, including Ernie Kovacs, Rod
Serling, Farrah Fawcett and Dave Chappelle. Barbara Walters even
interviews Pocahontas on The View.
The poems in RABBIT EARS, Allegretti writes in his preface, "are
funny, poignant, witty, mysterious and educational. In short, the
anthology is much like TV itself."

FOX is bringing back the popular and critically praised quiz show ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A 5th GRADER? for another season on FOX. Executive-produced by Mark Burnett, the show features comedian Jeff Foxworthy, who returns as host.
“ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A 5th GRADER? shares so much DNA with the FOX brand that it feels only natural to return it to the schedule – it’s smart, witty, irreverent and it turns the adult/child power dynamic upside-down,” said Simon Andreae, Executive Vice President, Alternative Programming, Fox Broadcasting Company. “All of the core components of the classic format will be there, but we are also adding new twists that make it fresher and more fun for viewers.”
“I have loved this competition from our first show and the timing couldn't be better for 5th GRADER to return to FOX, as there is nothing like it on television,” added Burnett. “Kids today are smarter than ever and the adults who try to take them on will have an even harder task ahead of them.”To read more or comment...
Today I asked my college-freshman students who Bob Hope was. Of about 35 students, three had some idea. One thought he was a comedian. Another thought he was famous during WWII. And one knew the name from an episode of "Cupcake Wars." This is why Richard Zoglin's new biography of Hope is so important; it points out how influential Hope was. The offiical word: NBC will air a two-hour holiday special of its popular a capella musical competition series “The Sing-Off” on Wednesday, Dec. 17 from 9-11 p.m. ET/PT. Six new groups will compete for a first-place prize of $50,000.
Returning judges Jewel and Shawn Stockman will be joined by Fall Out Boy frontman Patrick Stump while Nick Lachey is once again set as host.
Four-time Grammy nominee Jewel has enjoyed career longevity rare among her generation of artists. She has always been a charismatic live performer, earning the respect of other singer-songwriters, such as Merle Haggard, Bob Dylan and Neil Young, who, not only invited her to open their shows, but mentored her in the early phases of her career. After a tremendous amount of success as a singer-songwriter and more than 27 million albums sold, Jewel released a greatest hits album in 2013 that featured a collection of her best-known songs as well as two new duets with Kelly Clarkson and the Pistol Annies, in addition to a new track called “Two Hearts Breaking.”
She starred as June Carter Cash in the Lifetime biopic “Ring of Fire,” which earned four Emmy nominations. In 2013 Jewel released her much anticipated follow-up holiday album, “Let It Snow.” Currently, Jewel is recording her 13th studio album, a follow-up to her first album, “Pieces of You,” due in 2015.To read more or comment...

The Cavaliers are, to put it mildly, struggling. Should we have expected otherwise? Remember what King James said in Sports Illustrated when announcing his return to Cleveland.
I’m not promising a championship. I know how hard that is to deliver. We’re not ready right now. No way. Of course, I want to win next year, but I’m realistic. It will be a long process, much longer than it was in 2010. My patience will get tested.
And here we are.To read more or comment...

Magliozzi, 77, had been dealing with Alzheimer's. You can read NPR's obit here. The show ended new broadcasts in 2012. Here's an Associated Press story at the time.
"Click and Clack," the mechanics-turned-comedians who launched one of the most unlikely - and most beloved - talk shows in radio history, have decided that 35 years at the wheel is enough. Brothers Tom and Ray Magliozzi announced Friday that they will no longer record new episodes of the weekly call-in series Car Talk, but it will continue to live on in syndication.
The loss of the popular public radio show is a blow to NPR, and its listeners.
The show was one of NPR's powerhouse performers, in part because it appealed to such a diverse audience. People who had no interest in cars, or weren't the least bit mechanically inclined, were among the most devoted listeners - tuning in for the radio magic that took place when the brothers began playing off each other.
"We're certainly disappointed that they're not going to do this forever. But ... they've earned this," Eric Nuzum, vice president for NPR Programming, said in a statement released Friday morning.
Nuzum is a Kent State University graduate and former programming director at WKSU 89.7-FM, which airs Car Talk each week. The program also airs on Cleveland's WCPN 90.3-FM.
NPR President and Chief Executive Gary Knell sought to put a positive spin on the development. "I'm thrilled that they will continue to entertain and engage today's fans and future fans for many years to come."
It will be no surprise to fans of the show that they announced their departure with their trademark humor, which has been described as equal parts Marx Brothers, Mark Twain and Mr. Goodwrench.
"My brother has always been 'work-averse,' " Ray Magliozzi, 63, said. "Now, apparently, even the one hour a week is killing him!"
"It's brutal!" chimed in Tom Magliozzi, 74.
The two said they decided it was time to "stop and smell the cappuccino."
The brothers began making Car Talk in Boston 35 years ago. It captured audiences there, and soon became a mainstay on NPR member stations - remaining so for 25 years. Ostensibly, the call-in show is about car stuff. But it's actually about much, much more than that.
"We've managed to avoid getting thrown off NPR for 25 years, given tens of thousands of wrong answers and had a hell of a time every week talking to callers," Ray Magliozzi said. "The stuff in our archives still makes us laugh. So we figured, why keep slaving over a hot microphone?"
Beginning in October, the Car Talk production team will unveil new shows built from "the best of" archives, which include more than 1,200 shows. The brothers will still write their twice-weekly Dear Tom and Ray column.
The brothers left open the possibility that they might return to the airwaves for special occasions, or perhaps even something new.
They ended a note to fans with this: "Thank you for giving us far more of your time than we ever deserved. We love you. And know that starting this fall, for the first time, we'll be able to sit at home, laughing at Car Talk along with you guys on Saturday mornings."
Fans, meanwhile, are officially in mourning.
Said one commenter on the website: "I stopped caring about cars when I graduated high school. But, that didn't stop me from passively listening and laughing most Saturday mornings while out and about running errands. The biggest lesson I've learned from listening to Car Talk over the years? Strive to be more like Tom and Ray. Your obvious love of life, your strong relationship, the approachable and go-easy attitude, all things we should all strive to replicate. Thank you for your impact and years of service, best wishes in retirement."
It was signed, "Your most unlikely fan."
