Local Note: New News Director at WEWS

She's Jill Manuel, late of cable news in Chicago. Channel 5 announced her hiring today. A week ago, she told her staff in Chi that she was coming to Cleveland. Full announcement after the jump.

Jill Manuel, a leader in local television and multi-media platforms, has been named news director of WEWS NewsChannel 5 in Cleveland.

Manuel comes to WEWS from CLTV, Tribune Company’s 24-hour local cable news channel located in Chicago. She is credited with being the architect responsible for the channel’s consistent ratings growth by providing viewers with relevant, compelling local content. While at CLTV, Manuel developed and enhanced digital media platforms designed to make local content more widely accessible and, give viewers opportunities to interact with the station.

“Jill is a dynamic newsroom leader who brings her experience in taking news teams to the next level in both quality and ratings,” said Viki Regan, WEWS Vice President and General Manager. “She knows how to build synergy between over-the-air news and the 24-hour environment of the internet.”

Before coming to CLTV, Manuel was an Executive Producer at WBBM, the CBS owned and operated station in Chicago. While there she oversaw the station’s political coverage and execution of afternoon and evening newscasts.

Manuel also held positions with Fox News in both their Washington D.C. and New York newsrooms. She also served as the Deputy Director of Communications at the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.

“My hope is to help WEWS become an even stronger force in covering the issues that matter to Northeast Ohio,” said Manuel, “I hope to help focus all of NewsChannel 5’s resources on local news and issues while serving our 24-hour news audience over multiple platforms including broadcast, online and wireless.”

Manuel received her undergraduate degree from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin and her masters in Public Communications from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.

Manuel begins at WEWS August 18.
