Mixed Notes - July 6

By Rich Heldenfels Published: July 6, 2012

I am out of the office until Monday for some cheerful family business. But news keeps rolling, including a veteran local broadcaster becoming the interim news director at WKYC, and the CBS "buzz bus" being in town today.

On the news job: Distinguished veteran newsman Virgil Dominic will serve as Channel 3’s Interim News Director it was announced today.

“I can’t think of anyone better positioned to help guide our staff through the coverage challenges of the Summer Olympics and fall’s Prime Time launch than Virgil. He began his career at WKYC as a main anchor and set the tone for the region’s rich history of journalistic excellence,” stated President and General Manager Brooke Spectorsky. “For the past six years, he has been with us as a talent mentor and consultant, and we see this as a continuation of that vision.”

Dominic studied radio and television journalism at the University of Tulsa and served in the U.S. Air Force as a public information officer. He honed his broadcast skills at the NBC affiliate in Oklahoma before coming to WKYC-TV in 1965. He moved to Atlanta in 1972 to turn around its ailing ABC affiliate and came back to Cleveland to work for WJW-TV in 1976, propelling the station to a 15-year run at No. 1 in the local ratings. Throughout his years in management, Dominic mentored several top-notch reporters, such as Kelly O’Donnell, political reporter for NBC News, and Martin Savidge, correspondent for CNN and formerly of NBC.

He is a member of five halls of fame: Cleveland Broadcasters Hall of Fame; Cleveland Press Club; Ohio Broadcasters Hall of Fame; Associated Press Hall of Fame; and UPI Hall of Fame. He also guest lectures at various colleges and universities.

Virgil is replacing current News Director Rita Andolsen who has embarked on a new role as Director of Advocacy and Community Initiatives working closing with Gannett corporate and twenty other Gannett broadcast stations. A search is underway for a permanent News Director.

As for the buzz tour, which will be at Cleveland's Horsehoe Casino, here's the word from WOIO:  The “CBS Buzz Tour” bus will bring network ambassadors, activities and giveaways as a thank-you to the loyal fans who continue to make CBS America’s Most-Watched Network. CBS reality stars Alex Boylan (“The Amazing Race”) and Burton Roberts (“Survivor: Pearl Islands”) will spearhead fan activities and engage viewers with “Inside Buzz” CBS.com webisodes, blogs and social media contests and posts.

Get sneak peeks and screenings of CBS’s buzzed-about new fall series, as well as contests, giveaways and the opportunity to be digitally inserted into cast photos of several CBS series, which can be shared on social media sites. Plus stick around and meet your favorite 19 Action News reporters and anchors. Starting at noon Harry Boomer will be live broadcasting from the bus. Then Chris Van Vliet will have the scoop on the hot celebrity buzz live from the bus at 4,5, and 6pm. Plus get your sports fix with Tony Zarrella at 6pm!

Can’t make it out to the casino? Follow the fun from anywhere, thanks to companion on-the-road “Inside Buzz” webisodes, social media posts and contests produced by Boylan and Roberts. The “CBS Buzz Tour”-related schedules and content will be accessible via www.cbs.com/buzz.

“It is extremely exciting to be part of this ultimate road trip,” said Burton Roberts. “Not only will we be delivering content from the road – using all aspects of technology and social media – but we will also be face-to-face with countless CBS fans across the country.”

“It will be awesome to be on the front lines getting to interact with and say thanks to Americans all across this great country,” said Alex Boylan. “The fact that CBS is making the effort to give back to its fans shows the passion and loyalty it has for them. I'm extremely proud to be part of this effort.”
