I took a long weekend off from work and the blog in order to relax some, make a family visit, handle some chores (including a long-needed lawn mowing when yesterday's sunshine permitted) and catch up on some work for the classes I am teaching.
As a result, I have not yet seen the most recent lelecasts of "Breaking Bad," "Major Crimes" and "Copper" -- but they are waiting in the DVR. Maybe tonight. The bride and I did use some rest time to watch "What To Expect When You're Expecting," but it proved to be a movie whose cast implied far more possibilities for entertainment than the film actually, uh, delivered.
Items of note in recent days:
Michael K. Williams of "The Wire" fame has been getting some new attention lately, and here's a profile of interest.
I will miss the actor Michael Clarke Duncan, who has passed away, His obituaries have tended to focus on his work in "The Green Mile," which is quite good, but I was even more admiring of his performance on the briefly seen Fox series "The Finder." The man had a lot of moves.
I am also feeling the loss of Hal David,* the remarkable lyricist best known for his collaborations with Burt Bacharach. His words and Bacharach's music, especially in conjunction with Dionne Warwick's vocals, proved timeless marvels. I think of a song like "Do You Know the Way to San Jose" with all its little twists and turns, but the way he could then write directly in " I Say a Little Prayer" or "This Guy's in Love With You." Lovely things. Bacharach has a tribute here.
I don't know what you thought of the new version of "Coma," but here's my review.By the way, at the time I wrote the review, A&E had not changed its schedule to end the first part at 10:52 p.m. instead of 11. But by my calculation, that still means you were getting both a short premiere and more ad time than necessary.
This week's DVD/Blu-ray column is here.
Finally, imagine if you could hire someone to audition your companions.
*I just noticed that I had carelessly typed Davis instead of David, in spite of my attempts to be careful. My apologies.
