Music In My Head

By admin Published: December 3, 2010

I've been thinking about holiday recordings from the past decade, looking for alternatives to the same-old same-old. (The top song on Billboard's holiday chart right now is Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You," from '94. Second is Brenda Lee's "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree," from '58.) Your recommendations for not-so-oldie-but-goodies are welcome in the comment section below. Some of the things I have in my head right now include:

A surprisingly appealing bit of Taylor Swiftness from 2007:

Ledisi, "Be There for Christmas," from 2008:

Sting, "Soul Cake" from 2009:

Pretty much anything from Blind Boys of Alabama, including this 2003 cut:

And more besides. Check out Deana Carter's "Father Christmas" CD (2001), with her guitarist dad, Fred, who passed away this year; "The McGarrigle Christmas Hour" (2005) -- another loss, Kate dying last January. And I expect to be posting more between now and Dec. 25. (I've been putting up links to sundry tunes on Facebook.)
