Oscar Blog: ABC Pre-Show

By admin Published: February 22, 2009

Robin Roberts and Tim Gunn greet us, but hard to hear over the crowd noise. First interview: Kate Winslet. Winslet tells a version of the story she told Seacrest about her possible acceptance speech. Then cut to another fawner, interviewing Josh Brolin and Diane Lane; Brolin, told he's Oscar's good-luck charm, says it's been a great couple of years. Gunn with Amy Adams, who is asked if it's fair to have to wear a nun's habit in "Doubt" while competing against a topless Marisa Tomei in "The Wrestler." Sarah Jessica Parker gets asked again about the "Sex and the City" movie. Robin Roberts with Taraji P. Henson. This is like speed-interviewing; I keep expecting someone to hit a bell.

Gunn doesn't really interview Pitt/Jolie but he does take a moment to call them "the most glorious couple on this red carpet."

Gunn interviews Valentino. Roberts with the cast of "Slumdog" and director Danny Boyle, who apparently buys his shirt collars too small.

Asked what he's wearing, Rourke says "Take a guess." As with E!, talks about losing his dog. The ABC fawner says he outfit looks like "Saturday Night Live meets The Wrestler." Meaning, I hope, "Saturday Night Fever." Zoom to Miley Cyrus, zoom to Anne Hathaway. Hathaway's with Tim Gunn, so the graphic shows her outfits from the last two Oscar ceremonies.

Clips from movies referring to accountants lead into the arrival of the Price Waterhouse Coopers accountants, complete with fashion notes.

The fawning guy who isn't Tim Gunn talks to Meryl Streep and daughter, then Tim Gunn with Penelope Cruz whom he calls "gorgeous" a few hundred times. And I know the shows like to have the roaring crowds, but they would do better to fix the sound so their interviews are not drowned out. Roberts with Richard Jenkins; asked if people will now know his name as well as his work, he says, "I don't know."

Impatient with the ballyhoo, Jack Black asks his fawning guy, "Is it really your dream to be interviewing me?" Then, as the interview is cut short, Black wonders if someone more famous has appeared.

Marisa Tomei is much happier than on E!, but ABC has let Tim Gunn tell her how glorious and gorgeous she is.

Clips about the preparation for the Oscars telecast. Next post: a look at how glorious and gorgeous the show opening is.
