In my overlong adolescence, there were few guys as cool as Patrick McGoohan, who has died at the age of 80.
He starred in "Secret Agent" (also known as "Danger Man"). He was the driving force onscreen and off in "The Prisoner." Both those shows remain in my memory bank, and on my DVD shelves. (AMC, which is backing a "Prisoner" remake, has that show's original run available online at AMCTV.com.)
There were other gigs, of course, including on "Columbo," "Silver Streak" and "Braveheart," but the first two I mentioned are formidable enough. When I saw McGoohan onscreen, I expected not only charisma but intelligence -- and, especially in "The Prisoner," sheer determination. And if McGoohan could stand up to the bad guys, then I should be able to do likewise. Not that I could ever do it with the cool of McGoohan.
