Movies with Pete Postlethwaite, who died recently, took in more than $1.5 BILLION at the world box office in 2010. And he wasn't the lead in a one of them.
But his presence in "Clash of the Titans," "Inception" and "The Town" -- especially "The Town," where he was most memorable -- demonstrates, well, that he worked a lot (in TV and movies). But it also shows that he was someone who brought added weight to any production he was part of.
In another time, he would have been one of the stock supporting players at Warner Bros., playing funny in this movie and dramatic in that, vulnerable here and frightening there. I could see him working regularly with John Ford or John Huston. With his weary, battered-looking face, he could make you like him -- but also make you wonder if he could be trusted. All that comes into play in "The Town," of course, but his credits are long and impressive. (As I said, he worked a lot.) As the obit linked above notes, he also had a social and political conscience. Sorry to see him go.
