I know, every generation seems to have its own "Romeo & Juliet." I was in high school when the Zeffirelli version arrived. Younger folk have Baz Luhrmann's. But, while this new version does not come to theaters until October, I am getting somewhat excited about it. Script by Julian Fellowes, for one thing. Juliet played by Hailee Steinfeld, who was so good in the Coens' "True Grit." Worth keeping watch for.

"The Wolverine": Extreme Pulp

By Rich Heldenfels Published: July 26, 2013

It was about eleven o'clock  in the morning, mid October, with the sun not shining and a look of hard wet rain in the clearness of the foothills. I was wearing my powder-blue suit, with dark blue shirt, tie and display handkerchief, black brogues, black wool socks with dark blue clocks on them. I was neat, clean, shaved and sober, and I didn’t care who knew it. I was everything the well-dressed private detective ought to be. I was calling on four million dollars. -- Raymond Chandler, "The Big Sleep"

I had Raymond Chandler in my head while watching "The Wolverine" not long ago. And Mickey Spillane. Maybe Spillane more than Chandler or Dashiell Hammett. But they were all there in this pulpy epic, often ridiculous (especially at the end) but still a terrific rebound from the wasted "X-Men Origins: Wolverine."

Mixed Notes Tuesday

By Rich Heldenfels Published: July 23, 2013

On Monday night, I saw "Fruitvale Station," the acclaimed drama about the last hours of Oscar Grant, who while unarmed and under control was shot by a transit police officer in Oakland in 2009. I will have a review later of the film, which I greatly admired. And if you want to know more about the facts of the case and the movie's creative license, there is a detailed piece here. The piece has a spoilers warning on it, but I'm not sure how spoiler-y it really is; if you know the facts of the case, then you know where the movie, however tragically, is headed. The Oakland Tribune website also has a lot of stories about the real Grant case.

ABC Family has canceled "Bunheads," which is a huge disappointment. The series was very enjoyable, and star Sutton Foster was a legit heir to Lauren Graham in the presenting of the demanding dialogue of Amy Sherman-Palladino. I have not found much impressive on ABC Family, but this series was.

Dennis Farina. R.I.P.

By Rich Heldenfels Published: July 22, 2013

The fine actor and, based on my few brief meetings with him, nice guy had a blood clot in his lung, according to this report. A more detailed profile is here. Seeing Farina in a production made me give it more respect than I might have if he was not there; there was something cool about him, even if he could be tough and more than a little scary. He had been a cop in Chicago before turning to actiing, and it showed in his matter-of-fact authority.

Not that he was incapable of comedy; in fact, he was very funny in movies like "Get Shorty" and in the TV series "Buddy Faro," which was my favorite new show in Fall 1998, but didn't last long. You can find some of it on YouTube..

And all that attention has most likely made some young women think that motherhood is a path to fame. But here's the official word from the show:

MTV today announced that the emotionally-charged docu-series “Teen Mom 3” will premiere with two back-to-back episodes on Monday, August 26 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.   Viewers first met Alex, Briana, Katie and Mackenzie during season four of the groundbreaking series “16 and Pregnant,” where they captivated audiences as they faced the intense realities that come with being pregnant and having a baby at a young age.   The new series chronicles their lives as they do their best to raise their children while struggling with increasingly difficult relationships, the pressures of balancing school and work, and trying to maintain a semblance of their teenage years.

Worth Your Attention

By Rich Heldenfels Published: July 16, 2013

"Major Crimes" has been doing some fine work in storylines about a young, formerly homeless man and the challenges he has faced since returning to the mainstream. But it was even better last night with a story about the murder of a transgender 13-year-old, which had been preceded by bullying and by her parents' battling over how to handle a transgender child.

It was a disturbing show, in many ways, but one that also showed a range of reactions -- and how the bullying of one child can affect the decisions made by another. More than worth your seeing and talking about.

Sunday Morning Notes: Sorrow and Surprise

By Rich Heldenfels Published: July 14, 2013

As I was getting ready to go to bed last night, I saw a news alert that a Zimmerman verdict was coming. I waited for it, and saw that he was found not guilty. It was a terrible, disappointing decision, one brought about by a horrible Stand Your Ground law, which allows for vigiliante justice -- selectively, of course, as this other case indicates.Anger and argument have greeted the decision, including on Facebook, where I've seen some nasty debates. My younger son, Conor, spoke eloquently about that:

This is the only thing I will post about the Zimmerman verdict then I am done. Whether or not you believe justice was served or a wrong committed, there is no excuse for some of the most hateful and obscene things I have ever read to be said on Facebook. Thankfully none of my friends have said these things, but just browsing around various groups to see what others have to say about it has sickened me. I will be the first to admit that I use obscenities frequently and make off colored jokes but will never use a trial verdict to flood the internet with post that can only be classified as hate speech. I never like playing the "veteran card" but all I can say is I served this country for nine months to defend the rights of all Americans, justified war aside or not, and will continue to defend them to my death. Just think about what you use your right to free speech to say before you say it because I am sickened by what I see and I weep for this country if this is what we are truly made of.

"The Idolmaker" Coming to Blu-ray

Mixed Notes

By Rich Heldenfels Published: July 10, 2013

Tonight's TV includes NBC's premiere of "Camp," a comedy drama starring Rachel Griffiths as the newly divorced operator of a "family camp" -- meaning one that houses parents as well as their kids. The series has more than a little "Meatballs" in it, but I was exhausted before the pilot was over and did not get to two other episodes NBC sent out. The strained attempts at being adult and sharp-witted don't fly.In short, go rent "Meatballs." As for "Camp," it just doesn't matter.

Roger Ebert was famously prolific and not even death has kept him from publishing. Are You Ready for ... the Complete "Mama's Family"?

By Rich Heldenfels Published: July 6, 2013

It's coming. Here's the official word: From the first time the wildly-popular sketch “The Family” aired on “The Carol Burnett Show” in 1974, Vicki Lawrence has been followed by a buxom, blue-haired, purse-lipped, 65-year-old widow.  This is, of course, Thelma Mae Crowley Harper, Lawrence’s indelible, abrasive and smart alecky alter ego who would eventually be spun-off into her own delightfully offbeat sitcom “Mama’s Family,” which debuted on NBC on January 22, 1983 and ran for six seasons.

This July, StarVista Entertainment/Time Life, in conjunction with Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, invites all classic TV aficionados and sitcom lovers to spend some quality time with one of television’s original dysfunctional families with MAMA’S FAMILY: THE COMPLETE SERIES.  Marking the first time the entire run of this fan-favorite series will be released to DVD, the set will initially be offered exclusively online, available for pre-order beginning July 26 for $199.95 at MamasFamilyDVDs.com

Happy Fourth of July

I hope you all have ways to enjoy the day. We are preparing for holiday eating and family gathered, and thinking of family members in other parts of the country and world. We are also thinking of Ruth Woods, my wife's mother, who passed away not long ago, and whose passing we marked yesterday.

I will be back with more regular blogging tomorrow. And the blogging is a reminder of how this job has changed in the years I have been doing it. While I went on the Beacon Journal payroll in late June of 1994, I think of Fourth of July weekend more as my work anniversary, since before then I had been filing remotely (by fax machine!) from my old home in Schenectady, NY. I came to work in Akron about this time in '94. I remember my first weekend coincided with the rib fest downtown. And on my way I went.

Hallmark Channel Drops Marie Osmond's Show
