Regis Philbin Leaving Morning Show

By admin Published: January 18, 2011

"I'm not going to retire," he said. "I'm just going to be gone. ... I should have said, I'm not retiring, I'm just moving on."

Either way, Philbin, 79, said he is hanging up "Live," the national show he has co-hosted since 1988 (after it began in local TV five years earlier, with a different title).

From ABC News:

Philbin broke the news this morning at the top of his show. He confirmed that though he's departing, the "LIVE" franchise will continue. The Disney-ABC Television Group plans to name a new personality to join Kelly Ripa, who has co-hosted the show for nearly ten years.

Philbin said he would be stepping down from the show around the end of the summer, but didn't specify a departure date.

Seeing that Philbin was 79 was a bit of a shock until I thought about how long I had been seeing him on TV. I remember him as Joey Bishop's late-night sidekick in the '60s.
