Steve Martin TV Specials Coming to DVD

By Rich Heldenfels Published: May 30, 2012

Exciting news. Like many, I first became really aware of Martin's skill through his comedy specials. And I saw him later when he was playing arenas -- Steve Goodman opened the show, and it included a showing of "The Absent-Minded Waiter."

The official word: Shout! Factory and SOFA Entertainment announced a forthcoming jewel box of Steve Martin’s long in-demand television specials and stand-up comedy performances produced in the late 1970s and early 1980s, including the 1976 television special On Location: Steve Martin, vintage NBC Specials Steve Martin: A Wild And Crazy Guy, Steve Martin: Comedy Is Not Pretty, All Commercials…A Steve Martin Special and Steve Martin’s Best Show Ever.

A highlight of the collection will be Homage To Steve, including his Oscar®-nominated short film The Absent-Minded Waiter and a complete 1979 performance of his legendary stand-up act at Los Angeles’ Universal Amphitheater.

Shout! Factory and SOFA will also develop a full range of special bonus content for this new home entertainment collection, made in collaboration with celebrated actor, comedian, author, playwright, producer and musician, and will feature never-before seen videos. This announcement was made by Shout! Factory’s founding partners Richard Foos, Bob Emmer and Garson Foos; producer and filmmaker Andrew Solt, CEO of SOFA Entertainment; and Hollywood icon Steve Martin.

“Steve Martin is one of the most esteemed pop culture icons today. Home entertainment from this particular era of Steve’s celebrated career has long been limited to his movies and best-of compilation from late-night sketch variety shows. We are thrilled to be working with Andrew and Steve on a new collection that finally brings these legendary TV specials to his legions of fans,” stated Shout! Factory’s founding partners in a joint statement.

“I am thrilled that so much of my rarely seen shows will be offered to the public. I am told that these television appearances, concerts and bonus material, are among the best work of my career. I am told this by people I pay,” said Steve Martin.

“Steve Martin’s immense body of work as an actor, screenwriter, playwright, novelist, musician and comedian has given the world some of the most brilliant and beloved entertainment of the last 40 years and he continues to produce work that places him among the greats of American comedy. Only two complete Steve Martin stand-up performances were ever recorded live on video, and we’re proud to count both of them among the specials in this remarkable collection which includes many other hilarious gems that will have viewers laughing out loud,” said SOFA Entertainment CEO Andrew Solt.
