Although the complete "50 Reasons To Have Sex" list was not in last night's "HIMYM," CBS did post it -- in napkin form -- online, and I have included it above. Fairly funny list, too. Just wish the episode had been better. ...

Friday Morning Notebook

By admin Published: November 21, 2008

Spent part of Thursday evening at a red-carpet event with Will Smith. My story for today's Beacon Journal is here. It's an expanded version of what I posted online yesterday, but kind of fun. Good pics from Ed Suba, too, like the one above. I have a few more stories about how things went, which I hope to post later today. And I caught last night's "The Office" and "30 Rock," both of which were reasonably amusing. More on that later, too, I hope. Haven't gotten to "Grey's Anatomy," so still in the cone of silence on that as well as "Survivor" and "CSI."

"Saturday Night Live" (Updated)

By admin Published: November 16, 2008

I'm a fan of Paul Rudd but let's face it: Justin Timberlake saved the day last night. Couple of good-ish sketches before him; one good laugh in the guys-in-the-car sketch, and I liked the Rudd-Kristen Wiig "Ode to Billie Joe" parody. And Seth Meyers did very well with the armless-thief jokes. But JT had the very funny "SNL" synopsis, above, as well as giving full attention to the Beyonce dancers sketch. In fact, at the end of this one, the episode JT describes sounded a lot better.

Catching Up With "Friday Night Lights"

By admin Published: November 12, 2008

As you most likely know, "Friday Night Lights" survived for this season through a deal with DirecTV. Under that agreement, the satellite-program service has gotten the first telecast of "FNL's" current-season episodes, with the episodes showing up on NBC in 2009. I wrote a post back when the season premiere aired, but recently I had a chance to see the six subsequent episodes, including tonight's. I will post specifics about tonight's episode later, after it airs, and may offer some more detailed thoughts about episodes 2-6 over the weekend. For now, though, after the jump I'll have some thoughts about the season so far; it's spoiler-ish if you haven't been watching, but I'm trying to keep it somewhat general.

TV Talk

By admin Published: November 6, 2008

Today's Beacon Journal includes people commenting on how Tuesday's election changed America. I contacted several TV folks who were nice enough to send comments; unfortunately, by the time I got a couple of them, I had gone home with a wicked cold. Since they went to the trouble of offering their thoughts, I am putting them here.

Leon Bibb, above, the longtime TV newsman for WEWS (Channel 5) offered these words:
We took another step -- a major one -- toward making America what it always said it was, but for too many generations feel short. This country is about people from all backgrounds living under the same flag. What does an American look like? An American looks like me. And an American looks like you. America is a great democracy which shows the world people from many backgrounds, colors, and religions can live under a banner of democracy with each person respecting the next one and allowing each to attain heights which his or her character can find.

"Grey's" Running Away from Gay Stories?

By admin Published: November 4, 2008

Two reports were sitting in my morning e-mail that "Grey's Anatomy" is not only dropping the Callie-Hahn storyline, it's dropping Hahn entirely. Michael Ausiello of EW.com has an interview with Smith, which I have posted after the jump. And E! "Amazing Race": Speed Bump Ahead

By admin Published: November 3, 2008

Ken and Tina finished last on this leg, and were saved by this being a non-elimination leg. Of course, that sets them up for a speed bump next time. And I prefer the speed bump to the old no-money rule, which led to too many shots of begging. Speed bump keeps things moving while still penalizing the last-place team.

"Saturday Night Live"

By admin Published: November 2, 2008

The opening sketch, embedded above, was reasonably funny. But it brought to mind two questions. First, why do you suppose McCain signed off on the part about Palin "going rogue" unless there is some tension on the GOP ticket? Second, why was the rest of the show so bad? Well, maybe not the entire rest. But certainly the hour I managed to sit through. Ben Affleck is affable and eager, but the material for Jon Hamm was way better.
