CNN Hires Jeff Zucker As New Boss, Alas

By Rich Heldenfels Published: November 29, 2012

Jeff Zucker had a good reputation as a news executive at one time. But that's not all he has done in, and to, television.

''Zucker is a case study in the most destructive media executive ever to exist. You'd have to tell me who else has taken a once-great network and literally destroyed it.'' -- A competing network executive, to Maureen Dowd in 2010

"Alex Cross" On Video on Feb. 5

By Rich Heldenfels Published: November 29, 2012

The movie was shot partly in Akron. Reviews, including mine, were not good; it has 13 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, the lowest rating there for any movie with Tyler Perry. It took in $25 millon in ticket sales, according to Box Office Mojo, less than its modest production costs and a new low for a Perry-starring movie. Anyway, the official word:

Don't miss Tyler Perry in a "role like we have never seen him" (BOXOFFICE) when Alex Cross arrives on Blu-ray Disc (plus Digital Copy and UV), DVD (plus Digital Copy and UV), Digital Download, Video On Demand and Pay-Per-View on February 5 from Summit Entertainment, a LIONSGATE company. The latest installment in the Alex Cross series features Tyler Perry (Tyler Perry's Good Deeds), Matthew Fox (TV's "Lost"), Edward Burns (Man On A Ledge), Rachel Nichols (Conan the Barbarian) and Jean Reno (The Da Vinci Code).

Bookshelf: "The Revolution Was Televised"

By Rich Heldenfels Published: November 28, 2012

My friend  and colleague Alan Sepinwall has written a terrific new book, “The Revolution Was Televised,” an up-close look at the making of major and rules-breaking drama series from the last 15 years, including “Oz,” “The Sopranos,” “The Wire,” “The Shield,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Battlestar Galactica,” “Lost,” “24,” “Deadwood,” “Mad Men,” “Breaking Bad” and “Friday Night Lights” –  all of which get chapter-length treatment, with shorter side trips to some other programs.

The creation and making of each is examined in detail, based not only on Alan’s careful viewing but his extensive interviews over the years with the makers of the show, as well as newer discussions with most of them.

Mixed Notes - Nov. 27

By Rich Heldenfels Published: November 27, 2012

Tonight includes new episodes of "Rizzoli & Isles" and "Leverage" on TNT. Both are more than adequate shows, with appealing characters, although I prefer "Leverage" because it has a more devil-may-care attitude; "Leverage" seems willing to try anything in terms of narrative and character to nudge itself along, while maintaining an undercurrent of melancholy (since Nate, played by Timothy Hutton, has never exorcised his demons).  And I just plain enjoy seeing what Hardison, Parker and Elliott are up to. Tonight's episode has the group taking on the executive at a Walmart-like company, but next week's is more of a mind-bender, an explicit homage to "Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass."

Readers here over the weekend will have seen my brief notes about Larry Hagman, the "Dallas"/"I Dream of Jeannie" star who died Friday. Since I was working a Saturday shift, I was asked if I wanted to write something for the Beacon Journal print editions. I obliged, with a longer discussion than the one in my blog post. You can read that here. Also, TNT has posted a brief Hagman tribute video, which you can see here.

Larry Hagman, R.I.P.

By Rich Heldenfels Published: November 24, 2012

The TV icon has died, and already there is discussion of what this will mean to the new "Dallas," where he proved as enjoyable as he had on the original series. I remember Hagman from many things over his career: "I Dream of Jeannie," which I did not much care for; his character work in supporting roles, particularly in the film "Harry & Tonto," and of course "Dallas" itself. As Hagman has noted, including in his memoir "Hello Darlin'." he had his demons and his difficult years, but he was a true showman during his "Dallas" heyday -- holding court at press gatherings and even throwing his home open to large groups of reporters during TV critics tours.

I remember going to one such event in the '80s, which included everyone getting a commemorative T-shirt, "Beware! The Blob" (which Hagman had directed) on the TV screen; a reporter being caught snooping in an off-limits section of the house, and a glimpse of Hagman's neighbor Burgess Meredith sitting in his own home, watching TV. There was no one bigger than Hagman in his heyday, and no one more determined to get what he wanted, whether it was a bigger paycheck or bringing back Patrick Duffy. But he managed to make it all seem like great fun.

Not Twinkies!

By Rich Heldenfels Published: November 16, 2012

You may have seen the news that Hostess wants to go out of business, which could mean the end of Twinkies, Zingers and other precious blends of spongecake, frosting and creme fillings. If so, I am sure you felt a twinge of regret, especially if you were one of the people for whom a Twinkie was the best part of a school lunch (boxed or bagged). I just had a Zinger myself, as the space devoted to Hostess products in my office's vending area is steadily consisting of less product and more shelf. And one of my co-workers is making a run to the Hostess store, helping everyone stock up.

This all recalls the New Coke era, when it appeared that classic Coca-Cola was going to disappear. Friends and I kept each other updated on places with large remaining stocks of the old drink, so that we could stockpile some in anticipation of the classic's demise. Fortunately, the outrage over that (and the highly unsatisfying taste of New Coke) saved the old drink.

A Day/Night on the Road

By Rich Heldenfels Published: November 7, 2012

I was talking to Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted around 11 p.m. and asked him if he still expected there to be a winner in the Ohio presidential vote tonight -- since he had said that last week. He reaffirmed that -- with the caveat that tonight meant before dawn Wednesday.

Not too many minutes later, the networks began calling Ohio for President Obama, and the national election. A somber Husted took the stage in the Statehouse media room and laid out the difficult facts: the president had a lead, the districts yet to report were in large urban areas. He did not make explicit the conclusion to be drawn, but noted that people could draw it. After Husted acknowledged the inevitable, I gathered up my stuff, said goodbye to the reporters sitting next to me -- one from Switzerland, one from Turkey -- and headed off to the party headquarters. The big meeting/media room for the GOP was nearly empty. The celebration at the Democrats' hotel had spilled onto the street, and the meeting room was packed with people cheering every bit of good news coming from the large TV screens.
