Final Oscar Notes

By admin Published: February 28, 2011

Have filed my final story for tomorrow's print editions. Look for me talking Oscars tomorrow at 5:45 and 6:45 a.m. on WEWS. I will try to avoid any f-bombs.

I did not think this was the worst Oscar telecast ever, but it was certainly leaden. It actually ran a bit shorter than some other recent telecasts but felt longer, and that's even with me skipping a fair stretch because I had to file.

Had to file my early Oscar column. Caught bits of Law/Downey and Randy Newman talllllkkkkking. Back in time for the tribute to the dead. The column was shorter than expected, not surprising when you consider how unremarkable the show is so far.

George Hickenlooper, in the tribute, has his last film, "Casino Jack," finally showing in NE Ohio. Not great film but fine Spacey.

Also attending will be two of the film’s five lead actors, both of whom still live in northeast Ohio: Bill Kurtz and Patti Fairchild (mother of local TV personality Stefani Schaefer). The movie has never been released on video or DVD.

Shot in 35mm with a Hollywood crew, DOUBLE-STOP was filmed on locations in Shaker Heights, Bratenahl, and University Circle—including Severance Hall, where the Cleveland Orchestra (sans conductor George Szell) was hired for two days of shooting. The movie was made at the height of the city’s 1960s racial tensions, and is an earnest plea for tolerance and harmony. It tells of a cellist in the Cleveland Orchestra (the late Jeremiah Sullivan) and his wife (Mimi Torchin) who choose to let their young son (Billy Kurtz) participate in the new busing program intended to integrate Cleveland’s schools. But when the cellist sees a schoolyard reality that’s much rougher than what he had imagined, he impulsively pulls his child out of school, against the wishes of his more doctrinaire-liberal spouse.

Grammy Notes

By admin Published: February 13, 2011

As has increasingly become my habit, I posted my running commentary re the telecast on Twitter and Facebook. A few notes here:

Hooray for the Black Keys, winners of two for themselves; a third went to Michael Carney for the design of "Brothers" and fourth to Danger Mouse as producer of the year, for "Brothers" and other work. A good haul, but also one largely ignored by the Grammy people. No face time for the guys, and nothing during the red carpet pre-show on E! that I saw. Did the omnipresent Rihanna win as many? Maybe if they had fancy shoes for the E! hosts to discuss, they'd get more air time.

Happy Valentine's Day Eve. In today's Beacon Journal you can find my talk with the Black Keys' Patrick Carney as a warmup for tonight's Grammy Awards telecast. We didn't discuss music, focusing instead on the way television and movies have played a role in the Black Keys's career -- the licensing of songs to productions and commercials, the risk of being called a sellout, making the rounds of late-night shows. You can find the piece here.

Today's video column is here, and the accompanying new-release list is here.

Watching TV: "The Chicago Code"

By admin Published: February 7, 2011

Fox has quite often mentioned that its new police drama, "The Chicago Code," which premieres tonight, comes from the creator of "The Shield." As the show goes along, bear this in mind -- in fact, use that notion as a big reason to come back for more telecasts after tonight's. I would argue that some of Fox's promotional spots have, in fact, been somewhat misleading in tone because they overlook how very close to "The Shield" the narrative arc of "Chicago Code" becomes.

Super Bowl: Summing Up

By admin Published: February 6, 2011

Not a good year for commercials. The best spot was the one for "House." Lost track of crotch hits and other slapstick, but saw a lot of effects that didn't add up to much. Surprised to see Eminem doubled up. And Spielberg, come to think of it. Was not offended by the Groupon ad, as many apparently were; saw it as more of a mocking of self-important celebs and their causes than a slam at Tibet.

I did enjoy the halftime show (even if many others did not). Lively, excessive, kind of silly, and I liked all that. Certainly better than a year ago.

People Mag Covers Halle Berry & Ex's Custody Fight

By admin Published: February 3, 2011

It's the cover story in the new issue. From the mag's announcement: Halle Berry pulls out of her next movie – which she was set to start shooting in New York within the week – as a nasty custody battle heats up with ex Gabriel Aubry over their 2 ½ year-old daughter Nahla. In a bluntly worded statement to PEOPLE from Berry’s rep, the Oscar-winning actress, 44, took direct aim at Aubry, 35: “Halle has serious concerns for her daughter’s well-being while in the care of her father for any extended period of time and is prepared to take all necessary steps to protect her.” Berry, her rep stated, has attempted to resolve custody issues with Aubry “amicably…but given his lack of cooperation, Halle has no choice but to seek swift judicial intervention.”

Aubry’s agent and lawyers didn’t respond to multiple requests for comment, but friends of the French-Canadian model expressed shock at Berry’s allegation that Nahla would need protection from her father. “He is honestly the best dad ever,” says one Aubry source. “I never saw someone more dedicated to their child.’

"The Making of Plus One" Screened in Cleveland Thursday

The intermittently entertaining movie, about attempts to put together a movie deal which get more and more convoluted, is reminiscent of "Entourage" and "The Player" in the way it blends the real with the contrived. Black Keys Contend for More Awards

By admin Published: February 1, 2011

The official word: MTV’s 24-hour college network, mtvU, today announced the nominees for the “2011 mtvU Woodie Awards”- the one night of music where college students make their voices heard to recognize their favorite emerging artists. As the show heads south to Austin, Texas during the 25th Anniversary of the South by Southwest Music Festival, artists including Matt & Kim, Two Door Cinema Club, Wavves, The Black Keys, Wiz Khalifa, Mumford & Sons, Vampire Weekend and more will vie for “2011 mtvU Woodie Awards.” The show will air live Wednesday night, March 16 at 12:00 am ET/PT on MTV, mtvU and MTV2. mtvU will announce performers and presenters on a later date.

The Black Keys lead the nominees this year with nods in the “Best Video Woodie” and “Woodie of the Year” categories. Other artists up for “Woodie of the Year” – or the artists who made an indelible stamp on the college music scene this year - include B.o.B, Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem, and Wiz Khalifa. The “Left Field Woodie” recognizes boundary-busting artists who refuse to be put in a box and continuously surprise fans with fresh sounds. Kanye West joins emerging artists Die Antwoord, Lil B, Yelawolf, and Das Racist on this list thanks to his movie “Runaway,” and his ability to transcend hip hop, giving fans a new, unexpected sound with each album. Das Racist is nominated in this category based off their do-it-yourself approach and original sound that’s tough to categorize; Die Antwoord for their rap meets rave meets train wreck “wtf” sound; Lil B for pioneering warped, stream-of-conscious rap with (literally) no rhyme or reason; and Yelawolf for his unexpected murky, deep south hip hop.
