"thirtysomething" DVD Particulars

By admin Published: June 1, 2009

It's been known for some time that "thirtysomething" is finally getting to DVD in August. But after the jump is the full announcement ...

Created by the award-winning director/writer/producer team of Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick, the critically-acclaimed television series thirtysomething became something of a phenomenon by virtue of its recognizable title, compelling storytelling and identifiable characters during the course of its four-season run on network television from 1987 through 1991. The winner of ten Primetime Emmy® Awards, a Golden Globe®, a Peabody® Award and numerous honors and accolades, thirtysomething captivated television viewers with its realistic on-screen portrayal of a baby boomer generation coping with the complexities of growing up, and inspired many of them to re-examine their own lives.

Boasting an all-star ensemble cast including Timothy Busfield (Lipstick Jungle, The West Wing), Polly Draper (Gideon’s Crossing), Mel Harris (Saints & Sinners, Stargate SG-1), Peter Horton (Body Politic, In Treatment), Melanie Mayron (Lipstick Jungle), Ken Olin (Brothers & Sisters) and Patricia Wettig (Brothers & Sisters), thirtysomething channeled the consciousness of baby boomers into a running commentary on what it really meant to be on the cusp of success and failure, marriage and divorce, adulthood and parenthood. Every week the show blurred the lines between television and film, drama and comedy, hard reality and twisted imagination. Each episode of this truly groundbreaking series was its own unit yet somehow fed a larger, growing experience from week to week.

For years loyal fans have anxiously been waiting for the DVD release of the show, which has been unavailable on home video and rarely been shown in reruns. Marking 18 years after thirtysomething’s initial premiere on network television, the entire cast and creative team come together for the first time on DVD when Shout! Factory presents thirtysomething: The Complete First Season DVD box set on August 25, 2009. Poised to satisfy the yearning of fans of the series, this 6-DVD set contains all 21 original episodes restored from the original film elements, a special commemorative booklet with an introduction written by the show’s creators, and extensive bonus features that illuminate the genesis, life and afterlife of this seminal television series with all-new interviews and commentaries by Marshall Herskovitz, Edward Zwick, writer/director Paul Haggis and the cast. The collectible thirtysomething: The Complete First Season DVD box set is priced to own at $59.99.

The deluxe booklet accompanying the DVD set includes original art alongside full-color cast photos and special essays from Marshall Herskovitz and Ed Zwick, entertainment journalist Ray Richmond, and media professors Al Auster and Leonard Quart.
