Modern and mythical worlds collide in a heroic epic adventure when Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief arrives on Blu-ray Disc and DVD June 22 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. It’s the 21st century, but the gods of Mount Olympus have walked out of the pages of his Greek mythology texts and into his life, and they’re not happy – Zeus’ lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect. Welcome Back, "Glee," And Other TV Notes

By admin Published: April 13, 2010

"Glee" returns tonight at 9:28 p.m. (assuming Fox is actually able to get "American Idol" to run on schedule), and I am very happy to see it. In fact, I have seen three new episodes and am quite pleased. I don't want to get into spoilers but there are lots of plot developments romantic and otherwise (football's over, basketball has started), and plenty of tunes. The Madonna-songs episode is next week, and the return of Kristin Chenoweth the week after, but tonight is all right.

I will post about the "Dancing With the Stars" results tonight but, based on the performance show, could we please have Kate Gosselin go? Please? She is by far the worst dancer in the competition, and I am sick of the pleas for sympathy because her life is so darn difficult. You want difficult? Go talk to people who have no jobs and don't have reality shows waving a big check in front of them. Beyond Kate, it wasn't that great a night. A lot more posing than dancing, it seemed, and the two-score system just felt like a way for the judges to soften the blow on some contestants. You know, we hate your technique but you look good. And Nicole, seemingly the runaway best before this week, is still good but not being used well by Derek; it seems we've seen these moves (and poses) before.

Watch "Treme"

By admin Published: April 11, 2010

I have said more about the show, which premieres on HBO tonight, in this week's video. I should also say this: Where "The Wire" in all its genius was about the frustration attending human endeavor because of other humans' failings (especially in social organization), "Treme" is about human endeavor in defiance of disaster: Not even an apocalyptic hurricane-plus-aftermath will keep some folks from trying to make their world, if not the whole word, better. You may have read people saying that "Treme" is more accessible than "The Wire," and it is that. But where those comments at times refer "Treme" being less obscure in terms of storytelling, it should also be taken that, at least in the early going, "Treme" cherishes the human spirit in a way that "The Wire" often suggested was futile. This is not to say that the saga of New Orleans is any more optimistic than that of Baltimore, only that --having been crushed by nature -- the people of New Orleans still rise up.

The "Designing Women" star, and wife of Cleveland's Hal Holbrook, has died. One obit is here. I met Carter at least once, and admired both her and her work. Her pinnacle has to be "Designing Women," and especially the "Terminator" speeches which made Dixie the voice of series creator Linda Bloodworth-Thomason.

Carter delivered those speeches while playing Julia Sugabaker, an elegant and classy woman who nonetheless reached a point where she would unleash eloquent fury on the foolish and mean, particularly if they attacked one of her own. The fire with which Carter delivered them was something to behold.
