Mixed Notes - Oct. 26

By Rich Heldenfels Published: October 26, 2012

I have been off the grid most of today because of some other obligations. Still, I do have a piece in today's Beacon Journal and on Ohio.com about Cleveland's own Halle Berry, now starring in "Cloud Atlas" with Tom Hanks. It's been 10 years since Berry won her Oscar for "Monster's Ball," and more than one person has asked what happened to her career since then. I talk about the ups and downs here.

Sean Hannity, expected in Akron on Tuesday to do his show from local dining landmark Swensons, has canceled. A Fox News rep said concerns about storms and related bad weather led to the change.

Video Services Corp. Watching Stuff: "Happy Endings," "Don't Trust ..."

By Rich Heldenfels Published: October 23, 2012

Tonight includes the season premieres of "Happy Endings" and "Don't Trust the B----- in Apt. 23," two comedies with a fair amount of laughs, although I prefer "Don't Trust" to "Happy Endings."

Both are deliberately quirky, even mean, and could have easily fit into a Fox lineup with "New GIrl." In fact, I think a lot about "New Girl" quite a bit when watching "Happy Endings," since both involve fast-talking ensembles and a certain edginess to accompany the attempts to endear. But both shows tend to wear on me after a little viewing; there's almost too much snappy patter, and "New Girl" seems convinced of its charm to a greater degree than I am. Also, a little Zooey Deschanel goes a lonnnnnng way.

Mixed Notes - Oct. 21

By Rich Heldenfels Published: October 21, 2012

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the first time I voted for a presidential candidate. The candidate I chose was George McGovern, who has now died at the age of 90. Since then, I have voted for many candidates in local and national elections and primaries, but I still think of that first vote, how meaningful it was to step into that voting booth, and how happy I was -- and am -- to have cast that vote for McGovern. Even if he did not win, he was an honorable man, certainly more so than the one who defeated him.

Today's DVD/Blu-ray column, talking about a bunch of recent movies of varied quality, is here. A list of titles coming to video on Tuesday is here.

Mixed Notes - Oct. 20

By Rich Heldenfels Published: October 20, 2012

In today's Beacon Journal I have a story about breast cancer awareness, the boom in merchandise -- and how much things have changed in less than 40 years. I includes an interview with Betty Rollin, who was one of the major people in prompting frank, even funny public discussion of breast cancer with her book First, You Cry. You can read the story here. After we did our interview, Rollin sent an email with a follow-up note: "As a woman-- and particularly as a woman with with health issues--the thing I care about most these days is that Obama gets re-elected."

You can see in the tagline to the article that I lost my first wife, Mary Anne Leonard, to breast cancer in 1989. I have had many friends and loved ones who have been affected by cancers of various sorts, so research is a cause very dear to me -- and to my current, second, final wife. Accordingly, I agreed to risk complete embarrassment by participating in Akron Children's Hospital;s "Dancing for the KIds" event on Nov. 9. You can find out more about it here.

Mixed Notes - Oct. 19

By Rich Heldenfels Published: October 19, 2012

In today's Beacon Journal, I have a column about "Religion & Ethics Newsweekly" using Akron for a story about people with no religious affiliation. You can read it here.

Fox has offered a new, and presumably final, schedule for Tuesday to deal with the "X Factor" snafu this week from baseball rain delays. On Tuesday, it will still run new episodes of three of its sitcoms from 8 to 9:30: "Raising Hope," "Ben and Kate" and "New Girl," followed by an hour-long "X Factor" covering the events that were supposed to be in the two-hour one that was disrupted by the baseball issues. Which may give you an idea of how much padding there is in "X Factor." And yes, it will run until 10:30 p.m., a half-hour longer than Fox's usual prime-time programming.

Mixed Notes - Oct. 18

Newsweek magazine will stop being a print entity in December, instead becoming a digital-only brnad. One story is here.I was more of a Time magazine guy, but still read Newsweek often and subscribed for many years. But its increasingly nutty, let's-be-provocative approach under Tina Brown, not to mention the elitist tone that infected some copy, made me less and less interested. When our subscription lapsed, I felt no need to renew. More about the change is here.

I have a review of "Alex Cross" here. The movie is of extra local interest because it was shot partly in Cleveland and Akron (although the movie relocates local landmarks to Detroit, where "Alex Cross" is set). But it is a terribly, murky, woman-hating effort; Tyler Perry shows his acting limitations, but the script and direction don't help him. And I am not the only one to lament the movie, as you can see here.

Mixed Notes - Oct. 11

By Rich Heldenfels Published: October 11, 2012

Tonight includes the return of "Vampire Diaries" and the premiere of "Beauty and the Beast," which may be the most ridiculous new show of the season. Derived from the 1987-90 CBS series starring Ron Perlman and Linda Hamilton, the new version features Kristin Kreuk as a police detective who becomes aware of a mysterious man (Jay Ryan) who at times becomes a "beast." Where Perlman looked beastly, The CW apparently believes its audience will not accept a man unless he is consistently cute, so Ryan's beastliness consists most often of a scar across his face,. Just not too much of a scar.

I can't say I was a big fan of the old show, but compared to the new one, it was high art. This is sluggish, faux-brooding and dull when it isn't being silly. I won't be back for more beauty or beast.

Another Item of Note
