Woke Up, It Was an Oscar Morning

By Rich Heldenfels Published: January 10, 2013

The nominations are due at about 8:30 a.m. Some things to ponder beyond the customary winners and losers:

Will the big commercial films of the year get any love? The top five films of 2012, according to Box Office Mojo, were "The Avengers," "Dark Knight Rises," "Hunger Games," "Sklyfall" and the final "Twilight," so draw your own conclusions. I will be curious whether that group collectively can muster as many nominations (including minor technical categories) as some of the big individual nominees.

Will size matter? I have noted the way a lot of current films are clocking in around 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Will the Oscars like that?

Is "Silver Linings Playbook" going to get nominations but turn into this year's "The Descendants" -- respected, thoughtful but eventually passed over in favor of other fare? (I am still ticked about "The Artist" winning so much last year.)

From, some Oscar-related matter, including today's mailbag, with a discussion of what "Django Unchained" star Jamie Foxx said on "SNL," my review of likely Oscar contender "Zero Dark Thirty"  and my review of "Gangster Squad," which is in no danger of being in future Oscar discussions.

I will be online at this morning at around 8:30 for discussion as the Oscar nominations are unveiiled.
