Flashes to face Arizona State tonight

By admin Published: May 29, 2009

The Kent State baseball team will begin play tonight in NCAA Regional play at Arizona State.  The Sun Devils have a tradition rich program with five national championships and players such as Barry Bonds and Reggie Jackson have played there.

While some fans have complained that the Golden Flashes got a tough draw, being a four seed and playing a team as accomplished as Arizona State, head coach Scott Stricklin sees it the other way.  "I'm telling our guys that Arizona State is not happy about playing us either," Stricklin told the Record Courier.  "They are a national seed and here they have to play a team in the first round that was nationally ranked for half the year.  Some people let me know that we got a bad draw, that we got the shaft, but I look at it the other way.  Arizona State is probably saying 'Kent State is a pretty darn good team, maybe we got the shaft a little bit on this draw.' Kent State baseball wins MAC Tournament Championship

By admin Published: May 23, 2009

The Kent State baseball team (42-15) defeated Toledo this afternoon 5-3 in front of 1,518 fans at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe to win the 2009 MAC Tournament.  Kent State scored all five of their runs in the first inning.  Ben Klafczynski and Greg Rohan hit solo home runs for KSU then Travis Shaw hit a two run shot.  That's all the scoring Kent State would need as Kyle Smith came back from injury earlier in the season to start and give a solid three innings.  Kent State's bullpen, which did a fantastic job in the entire tournament, even without MAC Freshman of the Year Andrew Chafin, took over from there.  Alan Morrison, Robert Sabo and Jon Pokorny did the job from there.

Kyle Hallock, Jimmy Rider, Jason Patton and Chris Tremblay all made the All-Tournament team.  Shortstop Chris Tremblay was named the Most Valuable Player for the tournament.

By admin Published: May 12, 2009

Dave Carducci from the Record Courier is reporting that the men's basketball team will travel to Italy to play four games in ten days from August 20-August 30.  The last time the program went to play overseas was prior to the 1999-2000 season when former coach Gary Waters took his team to Italy.  The team will participate in an exempt tournament sponsored by Basketball Travelers.  They'll spend three days in Rome, three days in Venice and a few days in Lake Como.  The team will play four professional teams, and benefit from 10 extra days of practice before returning home the day before classes start.

Also, the field seems to be set for Kent State's season opening tournament that they will host.  The Hispanic College Fund Classic will welcome Alabama-Birmingham (UAB), Samford and Wisconsin-Green Bay to play in the round robin event in November.

Pinckney signs

By admin Published: May 2, 2009

It is being reported by a couple different sources that the last scholarship for the men's basketball team in 2009 will now belong to guard Ian Pinckney.  Pinckney, a 6-3 wing, was a qualifier out of high school but a question mark with the NCAA clearing house regarding a high school class led to him being a late qualifier and playing one season of junior college basketball in California.  He would have played last season at Motlow Community College under former Kent State DOBO Mike Brown but suffered a stress fracture in his hand.  He should have three years of eligibility remaining and there should be on official release on Monday.  Pinckney is originally from Chicago.
