Flashes hold final scrimmage before Spring Game
The Kent State football team held its final scrimmage on Saturday morning before their official spring game on Friday, April 30.
Kent State football radio analyst Rob Polinksy was on hand this morning and provided me with these observations on what he saw.
"The first team offense looked good early in the scrimmage. Keith connected with receivers Goode and Kirkland. Jacquise Terry looked very good early and scored a TD. After the early going the first team defense looked good and the offense struggled.
Freddy Cortez was 4 for 4 in FG’s all into the wind. He hit from 43, 31, 32, and 29 yards. In the red zone offense Spencer Keith connected with TE Jon Simpson on an 18 yard TD. He also threw a TD in the red zone offense to WR Tyshon Goode.
Kirk Belgrave had an INT in the end zone in the red zone offense and Josh Pleasant had an INT return for a TD of 59 yards.
Coach Martin said afterwards that he thought the first team offense was good while the second team offense struggled.
He mentioned that the second team defense, which had been struggling, stepped up as a group today.
Individually on the defense he praised Lainhart, Pleasant and LB Dorian Wood.
Individually on the offense Martin had high praise for his running backs and also WR Sam Kirkland.
A big concern is still who will step up and back up Keith at QB. Neither Morgan nor McCloud have separated themselves."
Doug Martin quotes:
"Our first team offense only had one turnover all day and that's what we need out of them. What's lacking the most right now is our backups on offense. We particularly need someone to step up and take the backup quarterback job."
"We've got a lot of depth at running back. Our top three backs are among the best in the conference."
"Eugene did his usual thing today making people miss and making plays. He's had a great spring."
“Freddy Cortez and Matt Rinehart are doing a great job right now."
"Our linebackers have been solid. And Brian Lainhart continues to make big plays."
"Spencer is a different type of player now because of the experience he got last year. And he's one of the best quarterbacks in this conference now."
