Flashes pound Pittsburgh, 16-3

The Kent State baseball team pounded 24th-ranked Pittsburgh on Tuesday afternoon at Trees Field in Pittsburgh by a score of 16-3.  The Flashes smacked out 20 hits on their way to the lopsided win.  

Back on April 7, the Flashes beat Pittsburgh 19-6.  Throw in Tuesday and the Flashes beat up on the Panthers this season by a combined score of 35-9.  Kent State improves to 21-18 on the season while Pittsburgh falls to 26-10.

Kent State will travel to Buffalo this weekend for a three game series. 

REYNOLDS IS PITCHER OF THE WEEK (AGAIN) - Kent State softball pitcher Kylie Reynolds won her fifth MAC East Pitcher of the Week award on Tuesday and the 17th time she has won it in her career.  Reynolds went 4-0 with a 1.24 ERA over the weekend as the Flashes swept their set of games against Miami and Ball State.  Behind Reynolds, Kent State has the best record in the MAC at 8-2. 

In 10 MAC appearances, Reynolds is 8-1 with a 1.35 ERA and 89 strikeouts in 69 innings.  Kent State (21-16, 8-2) will travel to play Ohio and Akron this weekend.

REESE AND JACOBY TROPHY UPDATE - The updated Reese and Jacoby Trophy standings are in, and it's no surprise that Kent State is excelling again.  The Flashes currently lead for the Reese trophy, ranking the top men's athletic programs.  The Kent State women's programs are currently ranked third in the Jacoby standings.

Points are awarded based on each school's finish, with the overall title divided by the number of sports sponsored by each school.

In 2008-09 the Golden Flashes captured their fourth Reese all-sports trophy.  On the women's side KSU finished second the Jacoby all-sports trophy standings - their 12th consecutive top three finish.

KONZ IN THE NFL DRAFT - The NFL Draft is this weekend and Kent State's Jameson Konz hopes to be drafted.  Konz has impressed NFL teams with his impressive measurables during workouts. features Konz today.

SPRING FOOTBALL GAME - The 2010 Kent State Spring Football Game is Friday, April 30 at Dix Stadium.  The scrimmage will start at 7:00 p.m.  Admission is free for all fans.  Free pro bowl posters featuring Josh Cribbs, James Harrison and Antonio Gates will be given out.  KSU alumni in the NFL will be on hand.  Fans can also sign up to win Drake concert tickets and the Ultimate Sack will be given away.  Single game and 2010 season ticket packages will be available for purchase.

This Saturday Kent State will hold their second scrimmage of the spring.

CAIRNS SETS SCHOOL RECORD - Junior men’s golfer Brett Cairns set a new school record for lowest score in a round and was named the Kent State Athlete of the Week after his performance this past weekend at the Aggie Invitational in Bryan, Texas.

Cairns, six-over par through the first 18 holes, turned in the best round in school history by carding a 10-under 62 with nine birdies and an eagle with only one bogey in the second round on Saturday.  He shot even par on the final day to finish tied for eighth overall, ahead of 11 ranked golfers.

Kent State returns to action next weekend (April 30-May 2) when it travels to Newark, Ohio for the MAC Championships at Longaberger Golf Club.
