Flashes spring: Goal line situations not a smooth process for Flashes

The Flashes spent Tuesday’s two-hour morning session focused on installing a two-minute package and coming off goal line situations.

“I thought we were a little shaky (offensively) at times and the defense did a good job stopping them,” head coach Darrell Hazell said.

* Senior kicker Freddy Cortez, coming back from surgery to repair a torn meniscus, had a good Showing, booting several field goals right up the middle.

“Freddy had his first real good day, hit some really good balls today,” Hazell said. “It was good to see him back.”

In other news from Tuesday’s practice:

* Hazell wasn’t as upbeat as he was after Monday’s practice, raising his voice more than normal when he spoke with the team afterward.

“We gotta have poise in those two-minute situations come fall,” he told the group. “Know the situation. Know how many timeouts we have…we also have to have good technique. Even when you’re tired in two-minute situations, you gotta find a way to win the game. Staying with the right technique and not getting sloppy is key.”

* Senior linebacker Luke Batton (Nordonia) underwent shoulder surgery Tuesday morning.

“It’s minor surgery,” Hazell said. “We knew about it two months ago. I just wanted to get him through 6 am’s and a week of practice before he had the shoulder cleaned out. He’s expected to be out just two to four weeks.”

* Thursday, for the final day of practice this week, the Flashes will hold a kick scrimmage.

“The big thing is to have the guys understand how field position changes with the kicking game,” Hazell said. “It’s going to be a series of live punts back and forth to each other, trying to establish field position to get into position to kick a field goal.”

While Hazell said the kick scrimmage “will be fun”, it will be more so for the winners. The losers have to pick up the trash at Dix Stadium.

“It’ll be fun, but it’s a very critical part of the teaching process,” he said.
