Spencer Keith tabbed as KSU's starter at QB

It took all of camp to determine the winner, but senior Spencer Keith was finally named Kent State’s starting quarterback Wednesday morning following the conclusion of the Golden Flashes three-week preseason camp.

“We’d been going back and forth, it was a hard decision,” Flashes second-year coach Darrell Hazell said. “But I think Spencer did a good job of taking care of the ball this camp and making the right decisions to get us in the right plays.”

KSU's football team boasts two local standouts

The Flashes boast two players as local as you can get in freshman Evan Shimensky and sophomore Marcus Wright, who played at nearby Kent Roosevelt High School.

The 5-foot-9, 175-pound Shimensky came to KSU as a quarterback, but just recently converted to a receiver in an effort to get on the field sooner.

KSU's offensive starters for the season opener Aug. 30

Here is Kent State's ofensive starters according to head coach Darrell Hazell at the conclusion of pre-season camp Wednesday, assuming senior receiver Tyshon Goode does not play Thursday in the season opener versus visiting Towson:

X receiver Matt Hurdle, left tackle Brian Winters, left guard Josh Kline, center Phil Huff, right guard Pat McShane, right tackle Kent Cleveland, tight end Tim Erjavec, Z receiver Chris Humphrey, slot receiver Dri Archer, tailback Trayion Durham, quarterback Spencer Keith.

Darrell Hazell knows who the Golden Flashes starting quarterback is going to be when the team kicks off the season next week against visiting Towson.

Wednesday is last day of Flashes pre-season camp

 Wednesday's 10:15 am practice marks the official last day of Kent State's pre-season football camp.

But after taking Thursday off, the Flashes return to the field at Dix Stadium Friday to begin preparing for the season opener against visiting Towson Aug 30.

No upset in KSU kick scrimmage

Kent State football coach Darrell Hazell didn’t consider Saturday afternoon’s 24-21 Gold Team win in the team’s kick scrimmage an upset, despite freshman kicker Anthony Melchiori topping senior Freddy Cortez in the end.

“No, there’s no upset because there’s so many moving parts – long snappers and those kind of guys – who play a huge factor into each kick,” Hazell said.

KSU's Friday practice "blacked out"

 After heavy rain and thunder made its way through Kent Friday night, the team moved inside to the Field House—except the lights wouldn't come on. 

Head coach Darrell Hazell ended the practice after 30 minutes (all the doors were opened along the sidelines to let some light in). Friday night was only scheduled to last about an hour anyway.

KSU football teams braves the rain during Thursday's practice

A steady rain fell from the sky Thursday morning - including moments of heavy downpours at Dix Stadium - during Day Seven of Kent State’s preseason football camp.

Head coach Darrell Hazell admitted he thought of moving practice indoors initially, but declined to do so after further thought.

Two-a-day practices begin for KSU football team

The first of 10 scheduled two-a-day practices began for the Kent State football team Wednesday with the first practice going from 9:30 to 11 a.m. in full pads and helmets and the second running from 3:30 to 5 p.m. sans gear.

With about 25 minutes remaining at the end of the second practice, a lightning strike in the distance caused a short delay as the team immediately ran off the field and headed for the nearby Fieldhouse to finish the day’s work.

KSU receiver Tyshon Goode sideined with hamstring injury in Day Two of preseason football camp

The second day of Kent State’s preseason practice was nearly complete when some late live action left Tyshon Goode lying face down on the turf at Dix Stadium, clutching the back of his left leg.

The rest of the team took a knee while trainers rushed over to the Golden Flashes senior receiver and spent several minutes accessing the situation. After about 10minutes, Goode was helped over to the sideline and then soon carted off the field.

Kent State opens fall camp; QBs liking competition

Fisher showed a strong arm on Friday but overthrew several receivers, a couple on fly routes down the seams. He said his arm was loose, and being from Oceanside, Calif., isn't used to the cold of March or the heat of August in Ohio.

"It's definitely hit me a little bit," he said.

Kent State recruiting update: Flashes after Cincinnati-area RB

- Kent State has shown interest in Cincinnati College Prep Academy senior running back Orlando Johnson, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Johnson, who is 5-9 and 170 pounds, also plays cornerback. He rushed for 785 yards and 11 touchdowns as a junior.
