Kent, Akron figure prominently in MAC commissioner Steinbrecher's state of the league address
Kent State and Akron sports teams figured prominently in Mid-American Conference Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher's state of the league address Tuesday morning during the MAC football media day at Detroit's Ford Field.
As Steinbrecher touted the success of the MAC sports teams over the last few years, he mentioned among others, two years ago Akron’s men’s soccer winning a national championship and Kent State wrestler Dustin Kilgore winning an NCAA individual title.
More recently, Steinbrecher applauded the sixth-ranked KSU golf team’s run in the NCAA golf championship and the Golden Flashes’ baseball team’s improbable run in the College World Series.
“Last year it could be argued that if not the finest season of competitiveness across the board for this conference, it’s certainly gotta be in the conversation of the top one or two,” Steinbrecher said. “And it started last fall with a 4-1 football bowl record and being awarded the ESPN Bowl Championship Challenge Cup (awarded to the BCS conference with the best winning percentage in the bowls).”
