CONSISTENT GREENE ROLLS ON - Kent State big man Justin Greene is the most improved player in the Mid-American Conference. The numbers speak for themselves. He might also be the Player of the Year and a first team All-MAC selection as just a sophomore. On Saturday, respected Miami coach Charlie Coles gave Green a lot of praise for his 18 point, 11 rebound performance. The Brooklyn, New York native had a monster game the first time against the Zips with 23 points and 13 rebounds and will no doubt be counted on Friday night to produce. Stephanie Storm has the story on how praise keeps coming Greene's way.
FORD AND DAMBROT UP ALL NIGHT - Dave Carducci from the Record Courier has the story how KSU coach Geno Ford and Akron coach Keith Dambrot attempt to prepare for the big game. Ford and Dambrot are two of the most talkative, quotable, charismatic coaches in mid-major basketball. As a reporter, turn your recorder on and just let them discuss the game. There are a lot of great things about this rivalry, and it starts at the top with two good coaches and good men.
EXTRA REST - Chris Singletary and Rod Sherman sat out practice yesterday as they could get an extra day of rest before Friday's game. The two did get up shots during practice. Singletary and Sherman have both been battling lower body injuries and soreness for much of the second half of the season as both have had surgery in the past year and a half.
IN CASE ANYONE WANTED TO KNOW.... Kent State is 11-4 in their gold uniforms this season, 8-2 in the white, 2-1 in the blue and 1-1 in the black uniforms (Pittsburgh, Bowling Green).
GET YOUR GOLD ON - Friday's game is officially a sell out so the atmosphere should be electric for the ESPN2 audience. Kent State fans, I advise you to get there early and flock to section 9 and the Kent State bench side of section 8 with your gold on. Section's 8 and 9 are on the bench side of the upper general admission sections. That's where I'll be. I'd rather sit with my fellow Kent Staters than struggle to see over the second deck bar that blocks my view at my probable excess media seat. Plus, I can cheer. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.
CONSISTENT CONYERS LEADS THE ZIPS - Jimmy Conyers has been Akron's most consistent and best player this season as a senior after an up and down career. He averages 9.6 points per game, 6.8 rebounds per game and could be in line for the league's defensive player of the year award. The Cleveland Plain Dealer has his story and also breaks down Friday's game.
BUCHTELITE BREAKING IT DOWN - The Buchtelite, Akron's student newspaper is breaking down Friday's game with quotes from the Zips' Dambrot.
FIVE REASONS AKRON WILL WIN - Mike Rasor of "Rasor on the Zips" is breaking down five reasons why Akron will beat Kent State on Friday night.
