Kent State baseball wins MAC Tournament Championship
The Kent State baseball team (42-15) defeated Toledo this afternoon 5-3 in front of 1,518 fans at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe to win the 2009 MAC Tournament. Kent State scored all five of their runs in the first inning. Ben Klafczynski and Greg Rohan hit solo home runs for KSU then Travis Shaw hit a two run shot. That's all the scoring Kent State would need as Kyle Smith came back from injury earlier in the season to start and give a solid three innings. Kent State's bullpen, which did a fantastic job in the entire tournament, even without MAC Freshman of the Year Andrew Chafin, took over from there. Alan Morrison, Robert Sabo and Jon Pokorny did the job from there.
Kyle Hallock, Jimmy Rider, Jason Patton and Chris Tremblay all made the All-Tournament team. Shortstop Chris Tremblay was named the Most Valuable Player for the tournament.
It was Kent State's fourth straight appearance in the championship game, and second title in three years. Kent State advances to an NCAA Regional to be played next weekend starting on Friday, May 29. The NCAA selection show will air on Monday at 12:30P.M. on ESPN.
