KENT, Ohio - Kent State head football coach Doug Martin announced the Golden Flashes' 20-member recruiting class at a Wednesday afternoon "National Signing Day" press conference. Fourteen high school student-athletes signed National Letters of Intent, while six members of the incoming class are already enrolled at KSU.

"We really bolstered our skill players last year," Martin said. "This year our focus was across the board on defense and on the offensive line. We really like this group and think there are some kids that can help us out right away."

This year's class has a defensive slant to it as 16 of the 20 newcomers play primarily on that side of the ball, including five defensive linemen, four linebackers, three cornerbacks, two safeties and a pair of defensive ends. The offensive recruits include two offensive linemen, a quarterback and a running back.

"I think we really did well in the state of Ohio again," Martin said. "Having six players already enrolled is also a huge advantage because they are already learning the system and getting stronger each day."

Of the 20 signees, eight hail from the state of Ohio, bringing the total of in-state recruits to 48 in the six years under Martin. The class is also made up of student-athletes from seven different states outside of Ohio: Georgia (3), Pennsylvania (3), North Carolina (2), Florida (1), Maryland (1), New York (1) and Virginia (1).

Last year, Kent State signed what was widely regarded to be the top class in the Mid-American Conference and the results backed that up, as 12 true freshman played, including five that started at least one game (eighth-most in the country).

Kent State wrapped up the 2009 campaign with a 5-7 overall mark and a 4-4 record in the MAC, finishing .500 or better in the conference for the third time in six seasons under head coach Doug Martin and for just the fifth time in the last 22 years. The Golden Flashes, who will have to replace three starters on offense and four from defense, are scheduled to open the 2010 campaign in Dix Stadium against Murray State Thursday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m.
