New basketball recruit got OVI in August

By admin Published: October 29, 2008

More not so flattering news coming out of Kent State today as another men's basketball player has recently been in trouble with the law.

It had not been reported that junior Frank Henry-Ala was charged August 16 -- fifteen days before Chris Singletary's resisting arrest charge -- for operating a vehicle under the influence and lane violations, according to Portage County records.

He was pulled over on Interstate 76 for a marked lanes violation at 2:06 a.m. When given a breathalyzer test Henry-Ala registered a .083, according to the State High Way Patrol. The legal limit is .08.

Sonnanstine better than game four

By admin Published: October 28, 2008

Note: I am currently working on a series of post entitled “How They Fared.” Each post will highlight a former Kent State baseball players and how they fared -- catchy name huh? -- throughout their major or minor league seasons. I would like to get the input of Kent State coach Scott Stricklin, but I haven’t gotten that far with it yet. If anyone has fun stories about some of those players or just interesting factoids let me know at jfortune@thebeaconjournal.com and I will make sure to include them in the series. Thanks in advance!

Former Kent State pitcher Andy Sonnanstine didn’t exactly throw as well as he would have liked Sunday night in Game four of the World Series.

Football team ticked off

By admin Published: October 28, 2008

One Kent State football player – Yes, I know his name, but I am not putting it out -- was fired up enough about his team Monday morning that he decided to pay the Kent State student newspaper, The Daily Kent Stater, a visit.

The player brought with him two stacks of the Stater's Monday paper and placed them in the doorway of their newsroom in Franklin Hall.

The official Mid-American Conference Web site is starting to release its team-by-team previews. Ravenna record Courrier Beat writer Dave Carducci does a "beat writer's take" on the team. Todd Vatter, Kent State athletic communications men's basketball contact, handles the public relations preview. Check it out here.

It sounds like it may be official that Rodriquez Sherman will red shirt with an ailing knee. Kent State is so deep at the guard position this year, but he was one of the better ones.

it is almost comical at this point.

Today Kent State missed two extra point field goal attempts. Nate Reed missed one. Will Kandray missed the other. Ohio also blocked a field goal right before halftime.

Previewing Ohio

Life doesn’t get much easier for the Kent State football team this week as the Ohio Bobcats come to town for homecoming week. Like the Flashes, the Bobcats are a deceptive 1-5. Both of their conference losses have come against Western Division teams.

Strangely enough, this game could theoretically push the winner into contention in the always-interesting MAC East title chase. Anyone could win it really. The East is that bad this year.

Recap: Akron 30, Kent State 27 in Double Overtime

By admin Published: October 4, 2008

This year’s Mediocrity Bowl..... err, Battle of the Wagon Wheel at Dix Stadium, was a fun, fun football game to watch. Two teams that mirror each other in skill level fighting it out for neighborhood bragging rights.

Two overtimes, big plays and even questionable calls were enough to entertain anyone who attended, whether KSU or Akron fan.
