Dick Schoonover was a Kent State legend and will be sorely missed.
His tremendous knowledge of pitching, and specifically pitching mechanics, helped him coach three All-Americans, 12 all-conference selections, eight all-region selections, six Mid-American Conference Pitchers of the Year, four Varsity ''K'' Hall of Fame members and three first-round draft selections in his eight seasons with Kent State (1986, 1989-1996).
Jonas Fortune has a story on the legacy that Schoonover leaves behind.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL - WICHITA STATE 66, KENT STATE 55
The Flashes struggled from the floor offensively as the team shot 33 percent from the field and 21 percent from three, while Wichita State (5-2) made half of its shots from the floor and 43 percent from beyond the arc. Chenel Harris led KSU with 11 points, and Ellie Shields chipped in with 10 points to finish in double figures.
“I don’t think we competed well as a team, player for player,” KSU head coach Bob Lindsay said. “I don’t think we responded well. I have no explanation. We didn’t play with very much energy.”
The Golden Flashes will play at Pittsburgh on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in a game to be televised on ESPNU. The last time these two programs played was in the 2006 NCAA tournament in Detroit. The Panthers won that game 79-64. In 2002 the Golden Flashes defeated Pittsburgh 78-73 in a regional semifinal game in Lexington on their way to the Elite 8.
Pittsburgh had a three game winning streak stopped with a 74-64 loss to Indiana at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night. The Panthers are 4-0 at home this season and currently own the nation’s second longest home court winning streak at 25 games. A 6-2 sophomore guard Ashton Gibbs leads the team with 17.0 ppg. The Daily Kent Stater previews the game here.
