Larry the Cable Guy keynote speaker at Mayor's bowl luncheon
Former speakers at the GoDaddy.com bowl Mayor’s Luncheon have included former NBA great Charles Barkley, former NFL quarterbacks Joe Theismann, Terry Bradshaw and Phil Simms and NASCAR beauty Danica Patrick. So, it was a bit odd when down home comedian Larry the Cable Guy was picked to serve as this year’s bowl speaker Friday afternoon.
“I guess I’m here to class the bowl game up a bit,” he joked during a brief introductory press conference before lunch, wearing his trademark cut off sleeves and hunting gear.
A little later, he even garnered laughter from Flashes coach Darrell Hazell and athletic director Joel Nielsen when he told them, “Believe it or not, I was going to play football at Kent State. But one thing kept me from that – high school.”
After the luncheon, it was obvious at least some players appreciated Larry’s offbeat humor. Freshman place kicker Brad Miller even tweeted: “Meeting Larry the Cable Guy was pretty legit! #GitRDone”
