Van Benschoten cuts ties with Pirates

By admin Published: November 23, 2008

After eight years with the lowly Pittsburgh Pirates organization, former Kent State baseball player John Van Benschoten has decided to call it quits, with the Pirates at least.

Van Benschoten, a former first round pick, has filed for minor league free agency and told the Pirates he will to sign elsewhere.

Good for him. I still don't understand how the Pirates could draft Van Benshoten, Kent State's all time leader in Home runs in a season as a hitter, and make him a pitcher. Countless shoulder surgeries later, he never made it in that position.

Hopefully he signs elsewhere and has a promising career revitalized.
