What is the CIT? Here you go
If I had a quarter for every time in the last few days someone’s asked me what the heck the CollegeInsider.com Post Season Tournament is, I might not need to work any longer.
But before I consider early retirement, I thought I’d share the details I unearthed before the 7 p.m. game Wednesday against host Kent State (20-13) and visiting Fairfield (19-15) from Connecticut in the postseason’s first-round action.
So what the heck is the CollegeInsider? Aside from some serious die hard hoop heads, I figured many of you might not know and I even had to look up the details. In a nutshell, CollegeInsider.com has been an online publication for the last 17 years, since 1996.
This season’s tournament is the 5th Annual, with the original beginning in 2009 with 16 teams. In 2011, it expanded the field to 24 teams and is currently a 32-team event.
The CIT was created “because of the great number of programs that continued to receive no consideration for post season play outside of the BCS power conferences.” Kind of right along the lines of why the ESPN BracketBusters event came into existence to aid mid-major teams.
All that made sense, but even I was surprised to learn that KSU’s own Antonio Gates is a board member. And that before Jeremy Lin brought “Linsanity” to the New York Knicks, his last college game was played in the 2010 CIT.

So what’s next for KSU with a first-round win? My guess is the team would travel to face its next opponent. The CIT uses the old NIT model in which future round are determined by the results of the previous round. The second round is tentatively slated for later in the week, either Thursday March 21, or Saturday, March 23.
